2022-09-07Cleanup: Move (edit)mesh_tangent.c to C++Lukas Stockner
This changes the two tangent-related files in BKE to C++ in preparation for the C++ Mikktspace port in D15589. For now, they still use the original Mikktspace. Differential Revision: https://developer.blender.org/D15636
2022-08-30Attributes: Improve custom data initialization optionsHans Goudey
When allocating new `CustomData` layers, often we do redundant initialization of arrays. For example, it's common that values are allocated, set to their default value, and then set to some other value. This is wasteful, and it negates the benefits of optimizations to the allocator like D15082. There are two reasons for this. The first is array-of-structs storage that makes it annoying to initialize values manually, and the second is confusing options in the Custom Data API. This patch addresses the latter. The `CustomData` "alloc type" options are rearranged. Now, besides the options that use existing layers, there are two remaining: * `CD_SET_DEFAULT` sets the default value. * Usually zeroes, but for colors this is white (how it was before). * Should be used when you add the layer but don't set all values. * `CD_CONSTRUCT` refers to the "default construct" C++ term. * Only necessary or defined for non-trivial types like vertex groups. * Doesn't do anything for trivial types like `int` or `float3`. * Should be used every other time, when all values will be set. The attribute API's `AttributeInit` types are updated as well. To update code, replace `CD_CALLOC` with `CD_SET_DEFAULT` and `CD_DEFAULT` with `CD_CONSTRUCT`. This doesn't cause any functional changes yet. Follow-up commits will change to avoid initializing new layers where the correctness is clear. 2022-05-04Fix wrong task priority for particle distribution and tanget computationBrecht Van Lommel
These kinds of depsgraph evaluations should not be marked as low priority as this could negatively affect playback performance. Low priority should mainly be used for background tasks.
2022-02-11File headers: SPDX License migrationCampbell Barton
Use a shorter/simpler license convention, stops the header taking so much space. Follow the SPDX license specification: https://spdx.org/licenses - C/C++/objc/objc++ - Python - Shell Scripts - CMake, GNUmakefile While most of the source tree has been included - `./extern/` was left out. - `./intern/cycles` & `./intern/atomic` are also excluded because they use different header conventions. doc/license/SPDX-license-identifiers.txt has been added to list SPDX all used identifiers. See P2788 for the script that automated these edits. Reviewed By: brecht, mont29, sergey Ref D14069
2021-12-07Cleanup: move public doc-strings into headers for 'blenkernel'Campbell Barton
- Added space below non doc-string comments to make it clear these aren't comments for the symbols directly below them. - Use doxy sections for some headers. - Minor improvements to doc-strings. Ref T92709
2021-07-13Cleanup: replace BKE_customdata.h in BKE_editmesh.hCampbell Barton
Only DNA_customdata_types.h is needed for BMEditMesh.
2021-07-03Cleanup: consistent use of tags: NOTE/TODO/FIXME/XXXCampbell Barton
Also use doxy style function reference `#` prefix chars when referencing identifiers.
2021-06-15BLI: use explicit task isolation, no longer part of parallel operationsBrecht Van Lommel
After looking into task isolation issues with Sergey, we couldn't find the reason behind the deadlocks that we are getting in T87938 and a Sprite Fright file involving motion blur renders. There is no apparent place where we adding or waiting on tasks in a task group from different isolation regions, which is what is known to cause problems. Yet it still hangs. Either we do not understand some limitation of TBB isolation, or there is a bug in TBB, but we could not figure it out. Instead the idea is to use isolation only where we know we need it: when holding a mutex lock and then doing some multithreaded operation within that locked region. Three places where we do this now: * Generated images * Cached BVH tree building * OpenVDB lazy grid loading Compared to the more automatic approach previously used, there is the downside that it is easy to miss places where we need isolation. Yet doing it more automatically is also causing unexpected issue and bugs that we found no solution for, so this seems better. Patch implemented by Sergey and me. 2021-06-08BLI: support disabling task isolation in task poolJacques Lucke
Under some circumstances using task isolation can cause deadlocks. Previously, our task pool implementation would run all tasks in an isolated region. Now using task isolation is optional and can be turned on/off for individual task pools. Task pools that spawn new tasks recursively should never enable task isolation. There is a new check that finds these cases at runtime. Right now this check is disabled, so that this commit is a pure refactor. It will be enabled in an upcoming commit. This fixes T88598. 2020-10-03Cleanup: Remove/replace C standard library assert() and header usagesJulian Eisel
We have our own assert implementation, `BLI_assert()` that is prefered over the C standard library one. Its output is more consistent across compilers and makes termination on assert failure optional (through `WITH_ASSERT_ABORT`). In many places we'd include the C library header without ever accessing it.

2020-04-30Task: Use TBB as Task SchedulerBrecht Van Lommel
This patch enables TBB as the default task scheduler. TBB stands for Threading Building Blocks and is developed by Intel. The library contains several threading patters. This patch maps blenders BLI_task_* function to their counterpart. After this patch we can add more patterns. A promising one is TBB:graph that can be used for depsgraph, draw manager and compositor. Performance changes depends on the actual hardware. It was tested on different hardwares from laptops to workstations and we didn't detected any downgrade of the performance. * Linux Xeon E5-2699 v4 got FPS boost from 12 to 17 using Spring's 04_010_A.anim.blend. * AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX 32-Core Animation playback goes from 9.5-10.5 FPS to 13.0-14.0 FPS on Agent 327 , 10_03_B.anim.blend. 2019-02-01Cleanup: remove redundant, invalid info from headersCampbell Barton
BF-admins agree to remove header information that isn't useful, to reduce noise. - BEGIN/END license blocks Developers should add non license comments as separate comment blocks. No need for separator text. - Contributors This is often invalid, outdated or misleading especially when splitting files. It's more useful to git-blame to find out who has developed the code. See P901 for script to perform these edits.

2018-04-16Depsgraph: remove EvaluationContext, pass Depsgraph instead.Brecht Van Lommel
The depsgraph was always created within a fixed evaluation context. Passing both risks the depsgraph and evaluation context not matching, and it complicates the Python API where we'd have to expose both which is not so easy to understand. This also removes the global evaluation context in main, which assumed there to be a single active scene and view layer. Differential Revision: https://developer.blender.org/D3152
