Dozens of files made use of gettext functions, without explicitly
including gettext.h. This made it more difficult to find which files
could remove a dependence on cache.h. Make C files explicitly include
gettext.h if they are using it.
However, while compat/fsmonitor/fsm-ipc-darwin.c should also gain an
include of gettext.h, it was left out to avoid conflicting with an
in-flight topic.

This allows us to replace includes of cache.h with includes of the much
smaller alloc.h in many places. It does mean that we also need to add
includes of alloc.h in a number of C files.

With 31c8221a (mktree: validate entry type in input, 2009-05-14), we
called the sha1_object_info() API to obtain the type information, but
allowed the call to silently fail when the object was missing locally,
so that we can sanity-check the types opportunistically when the
object did exist.
The implementation is understandable because back then there was no
lazy/on-demand downloading of individual objects from the promisor
remotes that causes a long delay and materializes the object, hence
defeating the point of using "--missing". The design is hurting us
now.
We could bypass the opportunistic type/mode consistency check
altogether when "--missing" is given, but instead, use the
oid_object_info_extended() API and tell it that we are only interested
in objects that locally exist and are immediately available by passing
OBJECT_INFO_SKIP_FETCH_OBJECT bit to it. That way, we will still
retain the cheap and opportunistic sanity check for local objects.

Change the write_object_file() function to take an "enum object_type"
instead of a "const char *type". Its callers either passed
{commit,tree,blob,tag}_type and can pass the corresponding OBJ_* type
instead, or were hardcoding strings like "blob".
This avoids the back & forth fragility where the callers of
write_object_file() would have the enum type, and convert it
themselves via type_name(). We do have to now do that conversion
ourselves before calling write_object_file_prepare(), but those
codepaths will be similarly adjusted in subsequent commits.

Change various cmd_* functions that claim to return an "int" to use
"return" instead of exit() to indicate an exit code. These were not
marked with NORETURN, and by directly exit()-ing we'll skip the
cleanup git.c would otherwise do (e.g. closing fd's, erroring if we
can't). See run_builtin() in git.c.
In the case of shell.c and sh-i18n--envsubst.c this was the result of
an incomplete migration to using a cmd_main() in 3f2e2297b9 (add an
extra level of indirection to main(), 2016-07-01).
This was spotted by SunCC 12.5 on Solaris 10 (gcc210 on the gccfarm).

The mktree_line() function does not actually look at the "len" parameter
it is passed, and assumes the buffer it receives is NUL-terminated.
Since the caller always passes a strbuf, this will be true. Let's drop
the useless parameter.

Instead of using a hard-coded constant for the size of a hex object ID,
switch to use the computed pointer from parse_oid_hex that points after
the parsed object ID.

This should make these functions easier to find and cache.h less
overwhelming to read.
In particular, this moves:
- read_object_file
- oid_object_info
- write_object_file
As a result, most of the codebase needs to #include object-store.h.
In this patch the #include is only added to files that would fail to
compile otherwise. It would be better to #include wherever
identifiers from the header are used. That can happen later
when we have better tooling for it.

Add a repository argument to allow the callers of oid_object_info
to be more specific about which repository to handle. This is a small
mechanical change; it doesn't change the implementation to handle
repositories other than the_repository yet.
As with the previous commits, use a macro to catch callers passing a
repository other than the_repository at compile time.

Convert sha1_object_info and sha1_object_info_extended to take pointers
to struct object_id and rename them to use "oid" instead of "sha1" in
their names. Update the declaration and definition and apply the

Avoid using identifiers that clash with C++ keywords. Even though
it is not a goal to compile Git with C++ compilers, changes like
this help use of code analysis tools that targets C++ on our
codebase.

Convert the definition and declaration of write_sha1_file to
struct object_id and adjust usage of this function.
This commit also converts static function write_sha1_file_prepare, as it
is closely related.
Rename these functions to write_object_file and
write_object_file_prepare respectively.
Replace sha1_to_hex, hashcpy and hashclr with their oid equivalents
wherever possible.

Apply the semantic patch contrib/coccinelle/qsort.cocci to the code
base, replacing calls of qsort(3) with QSORT. The resulting code is
shorter and supports empty arrays with NULL pointers.

Using FLEX_ARRAY macros reduces the amount of manual
computation size we have to do. It also ensures we don't
overflow size_t, and it makes sure we write the same number
of bytes that we allocated.

The program by default reads LF terminated lines, with an option to
use NUL terminated records. Instead of pretending that there can be
other useful values for line_termination, use a boolean variable,
nul_term_line, to tell if NUL terminated records are used, and
switch between strbuf_getline_{lf,nul} based on it.

which doesn't seem all that different, but not having that annoying
break in "Display all 180 possibilities?" is quite a relief.
NOTE! If you do this in a clean tree (no object files etc), or using an
editor that has auto-completion rules that ignores '*.o' files, you
won't see that annoying 'Display all 180 possibilities?' message - it
will just show the choices instead. I think bash has some cut-off
around 100 choices or something.
So the reason I see this is that I'm using an odd editory, and thus
don't have the rules to cut down on auto-completion. But you can
simulate that by using 'ls' instead, or something similar.
