2022-05-27fsmonitor-settings: VFS for Git virtual repos are incompatibleJeff Hostetler
VFS for Git virtual repositories are incompatible with FSMonitor. VFS for Git is a downstream fork of Git. It contains its own custom file system watcher that is aware of the virtualization. If a working directory is being managed by VFS for Git, we should not try to watch it because we may get incomplete results. We do not know anything about how VFS for Git works, but we do know that VFS for Git working directories contain a well-defined config setting. Stop moving the .git/hooks directory out of the way, or creating it during test setup. Instead assume that it will contain harmless *.sample files. That we can assume that is discussed in point #4 of f0d4d398e28 (test-lib: split up and deprecate test_create_repo(), 2021-05-10), those parts of this could and should have been done in that change. Removing the "mkdir -p" here will then validate that our templates are being used, since we'd subsequently fail to create a hook in that directory if it didn't exist. Subsequent commits will have those hooks created by a "test_hook" wrapper, which will then being doing that same validation. Add a "test_hook" wrapper similar to the existing "test_config" wrapper added in d960c47a881 (test-lib: add helper functions for config, 2011-08-17). This wrapper: - Will clean up the hook with "test_when_finished", unless --setup is provided. - Will error if we clobber a hook, unless --clobber is provided. - Takes a name like "update" instead of ".git/hooks/update". - Accepts -C <dir>, like "test_config" and "test_commit". By using a wrapper we'll be able to easily change all the hook-related code that assumes that the template-created ".git/hooks" directory is created by "init", "clone" etc. once another topic follows-up and changes the test suite to stop creating trash directories using those templates. In addition this will make it easy to have the hooks configured using the "configuration-based hooks" topic, once we get around to integrating that. I.e. we'll be able to run the tests in a mode where we sometimes create a .git/hooks/<name>, and other times create a script in another location, and point the relevant configuration snippet to it. 2022-02-28t7519: populate untracked cache before testTao Klerks
In its current state, the t7519 test dealing with untracked cache assumes that "git update-index --untracked-cache" will *populate* the untracked cache. This is not correct - it will only add an empty untracked cache structure to the index. If we're going to compare two git status runs with something interesting happening in-between, we need to ensure that the index is in a stable/steady state *before* that first run. Achieve this by adding another prior "git status" run. At this stage this change does nothing, because there is a bug, addressed in the next patch, whereby once the empty untracked cache structure is added by the update-index invocation, the untracked cache gets updated in every subsequent "git status" call, but the index with these updates does not get written down. 2022-02-28t7519: avoid file to index mtime race for untracked cacheTao Klerks
In t7519 there is a test that writes files to disk, and immediately writes the index with the untracked cache. Because of mtime-comparison logic that uses a 1-second resolution, this means the cached entries are not trusted/used under some circumstances (see read-cache.c#is_racy_stat()). Untracked cache tests in t7063 use a 1-second delay to avoid this issue, but we don't want to introduce arbitrary slowdowns, so instead use test-tool chmtime to backdate the files slightly. The t7063 delays are a #leftoverbit, to be worked on in a separate series. This change doesn't actually affect the outcome of the test, but does enhance its validity, and becomes relevant after later changes. 2021-12-13tests: fix broken &&-chains in compound statementsEric Sunshine
The top-level &&-chain checker built into t/test-lib.sh causes tests to magically exit with code 117 if the &&-chain is broken. However, it has the shortcoming that the magic does not work within `{...}` groups, `(...)` subshells, `$(...)` substitutions, or within bodies of compound statements, such as `if`, `for`, `while`, `case`, etc. `chainlint.sed` partly fills in the gap by catching broken &&-chains in `(...)` subshells, but bugs can still lurk behind broken &&-chains in the other cases. Fix broken &&-chains in compound statements in order to reduce the number of possible lurking bugs. 2021-09-08tests: disable GIT_TEST_SPLIT_INDEX for sparse index testsSZEDER Gábor
The sparse index and split index features are said to be currently incompatible [1], and consequently GIT_TEST_SPLIT_INDEX=1 might interfere with the test cases exercising the sparse index feature. Therefore GIT_TEST_SPLIT_INDEX is already explicitly disabled for the whole of 't1092-sparse-checkout-compatibility.sh'. There are, however, two other test cases exercising sparse index, namely 'sparse-index enabled and disabled' in 't1091-sparse-checkout-builtin.sh' and 'status succeeds with sparse index' in 't7519-status-fsmonitor.sh', and these two could fail with GIT_TEST_SPLIT_INDEX=1 as well [2]. Unset GIT_TEST_SPLIT_INDEX and disable the split index in these two test cases to avoid such interference. Note that this is the minimal change to merely avoid failures when these test cases are run with GIT_TEST_SPLIT_INDEX=1. Interestingly, though, without these changes the 'git sparse-checkout init --cone --sparse-index' commands still succeed even with split index, and set all the necessary configuration variables and create the initial '$GIT_DIR/info/sparse-checkout' file, but the test failures are caused by later sanity checks finding that the index is not in fact a sparse index. This indicates that 'git sparse-checkout init --sparse-index' lacks some error checking and its tests lack coverage related to split index, but fixing those issues is beyond the scope of this patch series. 2021-09-08t7519: rewrite sparse index testDerrick Stolee
The sparse index is tested with the FS Monitor hook and extension since f8fe49e (fsmonitor: integrate with sparse index, 2021-07-14). This test was very fragile because it shared an index across sparse and non-sparse behavior. Since that expansion and contraction could cause the index to lose its FS Monitor bitmap and token, behavior is fragile to changes in 'git sparse-checkout set'. Rewrite the test to use two clones of the original repo: full and sparse. This allows us to also keep the test files (actual, expect, trace2.txt) out of the repos we are testing with 'git status'. 2021-07-14fsmonitor: integrate with sparse indexDerrick Stolee
If we need to expand a sparse-index into a full one, then the FS Monitor bitmap is going to be incorrect. Ensure that we start fresh at such an event. While this is currently a performance drawback, the eventual hope of the sparse-index feature is that these expansions will be rare and hence we will be able to keep the FS Monitor data accurate across multiple Git commands. These tests are added to demonstrate that the behavior is the same across a full index and a sparse index, but also that file modifications to a tracked directory outside of the sparse cone will trigger ensure_full_index(). 2020-01-14fsmonitor: handle version 2 of the hooks that will use opaque tokenKevin Willford
Some file monitors like watchman will use something other than a timestamp to keep better track of what changes happen in between calls to query the fsmonitor. The clockid in watchman is a string. Now that the index is storing an opaque token for the last update the code needs to be updated to pass that opaque token to a verion 2 of the fsmonitor hook. Because there are repos that already have version 1 of the hook and we want them to continue to work when git is updated, we need to handle both version 1 and version 2 of the hook. In order to do that a config value is being added core.fsmonitorHookVersion to force what version of the hook should be used. When this is not set it will default to -1 and then the code will attempt to call version 2 of the hook first. If that fails it will fallback to trying version 1. 2019-11-21unpack-trees: skip stat on fsmonitor-valid filesUtsav Shah
The index might be aware that a file hasn't modified via fsmonitor, but unpack-trees did not pay attention to it and checked via ie_match_stat which can be inefficient on certain filesystems. This significantly slows down commands that run oneway_merge, like checkout and reset --hard. This patch makes oneway_merge check whether a file is considered unchanged through fsmonitor and skips ie_match_stat on it. unpack-trees also now correctly copies over fsmonitor validity state from the source index. Finally, for correctness, we force a refresh of fsmonitor state in tweak_fsmonitor. After this change, commands like stash (that use reset --hard internally) go from 8s or more to ~2s on a 250k file repository on a mac. The comments for the staging/unstaging test did not accurately describe the scenario being tested. It is not essential that the test files being staged/unstaged appear at the end of the index. All that is required is that the test files are not flagged with CE_FSMONITOR_VALID and have a position in the index greater than the number of entries in the index after unstaging. The comment for this test has been updated to be more accurate with respect to the scenario that's being tested. 2019-10-12fsmonitor: don't fill bitmap with entries to be removedWilliam Baker
While doing some testing with fsmonitor enabled I found that git commands would segfault after staging and unstaging an untracked file. Looking at the crash it appeared that fsmonitor_ewah_callback was attempting to adjust bits beyond the bounds of the index cache. Digging into how this could happen it became clear that the fsmonitor extension must have been written with more bits than there were entries in the index. The root cause ended up being that fill_fsmonitor_bitmap was populating fsmonitor_dirty with bits for all entries in the index, even those that had been marked for removal. To solve this problem fill_fsmonitor_bitmap has been updated to skip entries with the the CE_REMOVE flag set. With this change the bits written for the fsmonitor extension will be consistent with the index entries written by do_write_index. Additionally, BUG checks have been added to detect if the number of bits in fsmonitor_dirty should ever exceed the number of entries in the index again. Another option that was considered was moving the call to fill_fsmonitor_bitmap closer to where the index is written (and where the fsmonitor extension itself is written). However, that did not work as the fsmonitor_dirty bitmap must be filled before the index is split during writing. With this change, the `index_state` struct becomes the new home for the flag that says whether the fsmonitor hook has been run, i.e. it is now per-index. This one is tricky. When `core.fsmonitor` is set, a `refresh_index()` will not perform a full scan of files that might be modified, but will query the fsmonitor and refresh only the ones that have been actually touched. Due to implementation details, the fsmonitor is queried in `refresh_cache_ent()`, but of course it only has to be queried once, so we set a flag when we did that. But when the index was discarded, we did not re-set that flag. So far, this is only covered by our test suite when running with GIT_TEST_FSMONITOR=$PWD/t7519/fsmonitor-all, and only due to the way the built-in stash interacts with the recursive merge machinery. Let's introduce a straight-forward regression test for this. We simply extend the "read & discard index" loop in `test-tool read-cache` to optionally refresh the index, report on a given file's status, and then modify that file. Due to the bug described above, only the first refresh will actually query the fsmonitor; subsequent loop iterations will not. This problem was reported by Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason. read_directory() code ignores all paths named ".git" even if it's not a valid git repository. See treat_path() for details. Since ".git" is basically invisible to read_directory(), when we are asked to invalidate a path that contains ".git", we can safely ignore it because the slow path would not consider it anyway. This helps when fsmonitor is used and we have a real ".git" repo at worktree top. Occasionally .git/index will be updated and if the fsmonitor hook does not filter it, untracked cache is asked to invalidate the path ".git/index". Without this patch, we invalidate the root directory unncessarily, which: - makes read_directory() fall back to slow path for root directory (slower) - makes the index dirty (because UNTR extension is updated). Depending on the index size, writing it down could also be slow. A note about the new "safe_path" knob. Since this new check could be relatively expensive, avoid it when we know it's not needed. If the path comes from the index, it can't contain ".git". If it does contain, we may be screwed up at many more levels, not just this one. 2017-11-10fsmonitor: store fsmonitor bitmap before splitting indexAlex Vandiver
ba1b9cac ("fsmonitor: delay updating state until after split index is merged", 2017-10-27) resolved the problem of the fsmonitor data being applied to the non-base index when reading; however, a similar problem exists when writing the index. Specifically, writing of the fsmonitor extension happens only after the work to split the index has been applied -- as such, the information in the index is only for the non-"base" index, and thus the extension information contains only partial data. When saving, compute the ewah bitmap before the index is split, and store it in the fsmonitor_dirty field, mirroring the behavior that occurred during reading. fsmonitor_dirty is kept from being leaked by being freed when the extension data is written -- which always happens precisely once, no matter the split index configuration. Test the ability to add/remove the fsmonitor index extension via update-index. Test that dirty files returned from the integration script are properly represented in the index extension and verify that ls-files correctly reports their state. Test that ensure status results are correct when using the new fsmonitor extension. Test untracked, modified, and new files by ensuring the results are identical to when not using the extension. Test that if the fsmonitor extension doesn't tell git about a change, it doesn't discover it on its own. This ensures git is honoring the extension and that we get the performance benefits desired. Three test integration scripts are provided: fsmonitor-all - marks all files as dirty fsmonitor-none - marks no files as dirty fsmonitor-watchman - integrates with Watchman with debug logging To run tests in the test suite while utilizing fsmonitor: First copy t/t7519/fsmonitor-all to a location in your path and then set GIT_FORCE_PRELOAD_TEST=true and GIT_FSMONITOR_TEST=fsmonitor-all and run your tests. Note: currently when using the test script fsmonitor-watchman on Windows, many tests fail due to a reported but not yet fixed bug in Watchman where it holds on to handles for directories and files which prevents the test directory from being cleaned up properly.
