The intro on the main book page doesn't make it clear that this is the
2nd edition plus many years of updates. Let's say so.
I initially thought I'd rework the first paragraph, but I think
everything it says is still accurate and something we want to be saying.
So I ended up just tacking on an extra note.
The link to the progit repository is a little redundant, since we have
one in the sidebar already. But it's easy to miss, and I think makes
sense to emphasize here in the book overview.

app/views/site/index.html.erb: remove Facebook logo
|
|
Remove Facebook from the list of companies that use Git. Do so for a
couple of reasons:
- Facebook is now called "Meta", and this logo is outdated.
Unfortunately, the process for getting permission to use Meta's logo
is cumbersome and time consuming.
- ...but, Facebook / Meta don't substantially use Git, and instead use
a hacked-up version of Mercurial for most of their work (as far as I
am aware).
It's not clear that we ever had permission to use this logo, so let's
remove it from the site altogether. More information about this is at
the issue below.

resources/guis.yml: remove stray trailing space characters
|
|
When working in this file, I noticed a pair of lines that have extra
space characters before their line ending. These were introduced in
- 47c3473 (add gittyup, 2022-04-22), and
- da839bc (Add Anchorpoint to GUI Clients Page, 2022-07-31)
, respectively. To avoid an editor's automatic space removal from
accidentally introducing these changes into a different commit, let's
clean them up now.

Adding a new Git GUI to the Git website
|
|
The commit 1e77013 (Adding CommandGit entry to the end of the guis.yml,
2022-08-03) added CommandGit's entry at an incorrect level of
indentation, causing the resources/guis.yml file to be unreadable:
$ git cat-file -p HEAD:resources/guis.yml | yq .
Error: bad file '-': yaml: line 390: did not find expected key
Fix this error by re-indenting the new entry properly.

css: drop "word-break: break-all" from code blocks

This was added in #1644 (making the site more responsive), but can
result in us breaking mid-word, which is ugly.

- Details have been removed from prices as they became too long
- Change all yearly prices to "$price/user annually" (as opposed to $price/user/year and other variations)
- For tools with multiple tiers or options, replace with "$price+" with the price of the cheapest tier - this is because having two "$price/user annually" in one line was already too much, and also some tools have weird tier systems that are too complex to summarise better than that
Also added some comments that we might use later

Price is per year, not a one-time purchase
Should a client that hasn't been updated in 2 years be removed?

Inactive for more than a year, open issues for at least that long with no responses

Hasn't been updated since 2012, probably a bad idea to keep it?

Website seems to be falling apart. Need to give them your email to get a license (haven't tried doing that), no changelog in sight, Support link is 404, youtube videos at the bottom of the page are private, and their social media is inactive since 2017. Clearly dead.

Asked an EU resident to tell me the price in Euros (and a US resident obliged at the same time), I am seeing the price as 8.10 ILS which is about a middle value (also note that $1.99 possibly does not include taxes)

Website is down, relevant search result is this plugin https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=CodiceSoftware.gmaster which was last updated in 2018. Likely abandoned.
|
|
The URL redirects to other-domain.com/products/giteye which redirects *in JavaScripts* to other-domain.com/products which makes no mention of GitEye. The GitEye page, if opened with JavaScript disabled, is still semi-functional but that's clearly just an oversight. I can only deduce that GitEye was abandoned.
