2022-09-27Cycles: add Path Guiding on CPU through Intel OpenPGLSebastian Herhoz
This adds path guiding features into Cycles by integrating Intel's Open Path Guiding Library. It can be enabled in the Sampling > Path Guiding panel in the render properties. This feature helps reduce noise in scenes where finding a path to light is difficult for regular path tracing. The current implementation supports guiding directional sampling decisions on surfaces, when the material contains a least one diffuse component, and in volumes with isotropic and anisotropic Henyey-Greenstein phase functions. On surfaces, the guided sampling decision is proportional to the product of the incident radiance and the normal-oriented cosine lobe and in volumes it is proportional to the product of the incident radiance and the phase function. The incident radiance field of a scene is learned and updated during rendering after each per-frame rendering iteration/progression. At the moment, path guiding is only supported by the CPU backend. Support for GPU backends will be added in future versions of OpenPGL. Ref T92571 Differential Revision: https://developer.blender.org/D15286

2022-06-02Cleanup: remove "<pep8 compliant>" from headersCampbell Barton
It can be assumed that all scripts comply with basic pep8 formatting regarding white-space, indentation etc. Also remove note in best practices page & update `tests/python/pep8.py`. If we want to exclude some scripts from make format, this can be done by adding them to `ignore_files` in: source/tools/utils_maintenance/autopep8_format_paths.py Or using `# nopep8` for to ignore for individual lines. Disable autopep8 for the block that yields passes in list_render_passes, for better readability.
2022-04-10Fix T97159: AOV Pass in Cycles always gets Alpha Value of 1 for whole imageLukas Stockner
As far as I can see, it makes a lot of sense to have the alpha channel here, it matches the 2.x behavior and also matches what Eevee is doing. Differential Revision: https://developer.blender.org/D14595
2022-04-02Cycles: Add support for light groupsLukas Stockner
Light groups are a type of pass that only contains lighting from a subset of light sources. They are created in the View layer, and light sources (lamps, objects with emissive materials and/or the environment) can be assigned to a group. Currently, each light group ends up generating its own version of the Combined pass. In the future, additional types of passes (e.g. shadowcatcher) might be getting their own per-lightgroup versions. The lightgroup creation and assignment is not Cycles-specific, so Eevee or external render engines could make use of it in the future. Note that Lightgroups are identified by their name - therefore, the name of the Lightgroup in the View Layer and the name that's set in an object's settings must match for it to be included. Currently, changing a Lightgroup's name does not update objects - this is planned for the future, along with other features such as denoising for light groups and viewing them in preview renders. Original patch by Alex Fuller (@mistaed), with some polishing by Lukas Stockner (@lukasstockner97). Differential Revision: https://developer.blender.org/D12871

2022-01-10Fix T93727: Tiled render error in Cycles after changing temp directorySergey Sharybin
Consider temporary directory to be variant part of session configuration which gets communicated to the tile manager on render reset. This allows to be able to render with one temp directory, change the directory, render again and have proper render result even with enabled persistent data. For the ease of access to the temp directory expose it via the render engine API (engine.temp_directory). Differential Revision: https://developer.blender.org/D13790

2021-09-28Cycles: add HIP device support for AMD GPUsBrian Savery
NOTE: this feature is not ready for user testing, and not yet enabled in daily builds. It is being merged now for easier collaboration on development. HIP is a heterogenous compute interface allowing C++ code to be executed on GPUs similar to CUDA. It is intended to bring back AMD GPU rendering support on Windows and Linux. https://github.com/ROCm-Developer-Tools/HIP. As of the time of writing, it should compile and run on Linux with existing HIP compilers and driver runtimes. Publicly available compilers and drivers for Windows will come later. This includes much improved GPU rendering performance, viewport interactivity, new shadow catcher, revamped sampling settings, subsurface scattering anisotropy, new GPU volume sampling, improved PMJ sampling pattern, and more. Some features have also been removed or changed, breaking backwards compatibility. Including the removal of the OpenCL backend, for which alternatives are under development. 2021-07-28Cycles: remove WITH_CYCLES_DEBUG, add WITH_CYCLES_DEBUG_NANBrecht Van Lommel
WITH_CYCLES_DEBUG was used for rendering BVH debugging passes. But since we mainly use Embree an OptiX now, this information is no longer important. WITH_CYCLES_DEBUG_NAN will enable additional checks for NaNs and invalid values in the kernel, for Cycles developers. Previously these asserts where enabled in all debug builds, but this is too likely to crash Blender in scenes that render fine regardless of the NaNs. So this is behind a CMake option now. Support Python 3.10a5 or 3.9x with support explicitly enabled. - Enable Python's postponed annotations for Blender's RNA classes types registered on startup. - Using postponed annotations has implications for how they are defined, since they must evaluate in the modules name-space instead of the classes name-space. See changes to annotations in `release/scripts`. - Use `from __future__ import annotations` at the top of the module to ensure the script will run with Python 3.10. - Old logic is kept since it could be used if PEP-649 is supported. Therefore, this patch adds a simple command-line option to Blender for specifying the type of device that should be used. 2020-05-15Cycles: code refactor to bake using regular render session and tilesBrecht Van Lommel
There should be no user visible change from this, except that tile size now affects performance. The goal here is to simplify bake denoising in D3099, letting it reuse more denoising tiles and pass code. A lot of code is now shared with regular rendering, with the two main differences being that we read some render result passes from the bake API when starting to render a tile, and call the bake kernel instead of the path trace kernel. With this kind of design where Cycles asks for tiles from the bake API, it should eventually be easier to reduce memory usage, show tiles as they are baked, or bake multiple passes at once, though there's still quite some work needed for that. 2020-03-05Adaptive Sampling for Cycles.Stefan Werner
This feature takes some inspiration from "RenderMan: An Advanced Path Tracing Architecture for Movie Rendering" and "A Hierarchical Automatic Stopping Condition for Monte Carlo Global Illumination" The basic principle is as follows: While samples are being added to a pixel, the adaptive sampler writes half of the samples to a separate buffer. This gives it two separate estimates of the same pixel, and by comparing their difference it estimates convergence. Once convergence drops below a given threshold, the pixel is considered done. When a pixel has not converged yet and needs more samples than the minimum, its immediate neighbors are also set to take more samples. This is done in order to more reliably detect sharp features such as caustics. A 3x3 box filter that is run periodically over the tile buffer is used for that purpose. After a tile has finished rendering, the values of all passes are scaled as if they were rendered with the full number of samples. This way, any code operating on these buffers, for example the denoiser, does not need to be changed for per-pixel sample counts. 2019-12-10Cycles: support for custom shader AOVsLukas Stockner
Custom render passes are added in the Shader AOVs panel in the view layer settings, with a name and data type. In shader nodes, an AOV Output node is then used to output either a value or color to the pass. 2019-09-12Cycles: Initial Support For Local ViewJeroen Bakker

This entails a difference with Blender 2.79, where lights were automatically added to the local view. {T69780} describes this should be solved before the next release. This patch also solves missing `owner_id` issues when using the RNA CPP Api from Cycles. Cycles didn't provide the `owner_id` making some functionality fail, what then was worked around in Blender. It also fixes an issue in `makesrna` where incorrect CPP code was generated when only `PARM_RNAPTR` was provided.
