This includes much improved GPU rendering performance, viewport interactivity,
new shadow catcher, revamped sampling settings, subsurface scattering anisotropy,
new GPU volume sampling, improved PMJ sampling pattern, and more.
Some features have also been removed or changed, breaking backwards compatibility.
Including the removal of the OpenCL backend, for which alternatives are under
development.

Cycles has supported path-traced subsurface scattering for a while, but while it's
more accurate than other approaches, the increase in noise makes it an expensive option.
To improve this, this patch implements Dwivedi guiding, a technique that is based on
zero-variance random walk theory from particle physics and helps to produce shorter
random walks with more consistent throughput.
The idea behind this is that in non-white materials, each scattering event inside the
medium reduces the path throughput. Therefore, the darker the material is, the lower the
contribution of paths that travel far from the origin is.
In order to reduce variance, Dwivedi guiding uses modified direction and distance sampling
functions that favor paths which go back towards the medium interface.
By carefully selecting these sampling distributions, variance can be greatly reduced, and
as a neat side effect shorter paths are produced, which speeds up the process.
One limitation of just blindly applying this is that the guiding is derived from the
assumption of a medium that covers an infinite half-space. Therefore, at corners or thin
geometry where this does not hold, the algorithm might lead to fireflies.
To avoid this, the implementation here uses MIS to combine the classic and guided sampling.
Since each of those works on one of the three color channels, the final estimator combines
six sampling techniques. This results in some unintuitive math, but I tried to structure
it in a way that makes some sense.
Another improvement is that in areas where the other side of the mesh is close (e.g. ears),
the algorithm has a chance to switch to guiding towards the other side. This chance is based
on how deep the random walk is inside the object, and once again MIS is applied to the
decision, giving a total of nine techniques.
Combining all this, the noise of path-traced subsurface scattering is reduced significantly.
In my testing with the Rain character model and a simple lighting setup, the path-traced
SSS is now actually less noisy than the Christensen-Burley approximation at same render time
while of course still being significantly more realistic.

Support for the AO and bevel shader nodes requires calling "optixTrace" from within the shading
VM, which is only allowed from inlined functions to the raygen program or callables. This patch
therefore converts the shading VM to use direct callables to make it work. To prevent performance
regressions a separate kernel module is compiled and used for this purpose.

Random Walk subsurface scattering did look different with OptiX because transmittance is
calculated based on the hit distance, but the OptiX implementation of `scene_intersect_local`
would return the distance in world space, while the Cycles BVH version returns it in object
space. This fixes the problem by simply skipping the object->world transforms in all the
places using the result of `scene_intersect_local` with OptiX.

Custom render passes are added in the Shader AOVs panel in the view layer
settings, with a name and data type. In shader nodes, an AOV Output node
is then used to output either a value or color to the pass.
Arbitrary names can be used for these passes, as long as they don't conflict
with built-in passes that are enabled. The AOV Output node can be used in both
material and world shader nodes.
Implemented by Lukas, with tweaks by Brecht.

We now continue transparent paths after diffuse/glossy/transmission/volume
bounces are exceeded. This avoids unexpected boundaries in volumes with
transparent boundaries. It is also required for MIS to work correctly with
transparent surfaces, as we also continue through these in shadow rays.
The main visible changes is that volumes will now be lit by the background
even at volume bounces 0, same as surfaces.
Fixes T53914 and T54103.

Unify the path and branched path indirect SSS code. No performance impact

It is basically brute force volume scattering within the mesh, but part
of the SSS code for faster performance. The main difference with actual
volume scattering is that we assume the boundaries are diffuse and that
all lighting is coming through this boundary from outside the volume.
This gives much more accurate results for thin features and low density.
Some challenges remain however:
* Significantly more noisy than BSSRDF. Adding Dwivedi sampling may help
here, but it's unclear still how much it helps in real world cases.
* Due to this being a volumetric method, geometry like eyes or mouth can
darken the skin on the outside. We may be able to reduce this effect,
or users can compensate for it by reducing the scattering radius in
such areas.
* Sharp corners are quite bright. This matches actual volume rendering
and results in some other renderers, but maybe not so much real world
objects.

This also fixes a subtle bug in the split kernel branched path SSS, the
volume stack update can't be shared between multiple hit points.
|
|
Previously we stored each color channel in a single closure, which was
convenient for sampling a closure and channel together. But this doesn't
work so well for algorithms where we want to render multiple color
channels together.
|
|
The bevel and SSS code could result in NaNs in some cases, tweak the
formulas so this can't happen.
|
|
Goal is to reduce OpenCL kernel recompilations.
Currently viewport renders are still set to use 64 closures as this seems to
be faster and we don't want to cause a performance regression there. Needs
to be investigated.

Similar to what we did for area lights previously, this should help
preserve stratification when using multiple BSDFs in theory. Improvements
are not easily noticeable in practice though, because the number of BSDFs
is usually low. Still nice to eliminate one sampling dimension.

This was needed when we accessed OSL closure memory after shader evaluation,
which could get overwritten by another shader evaluation. But all closures
are immediatley converted to ShaderClosure now, so no longer needed.

Also pass by value and don't write back now that it is just a hash for seeding

Was some mismatch in address space. Seems to be caused by recent additions.
Additionally, moved decoupled ray marching functions under ifdef, so they

This implements branched path tracing for the split kernel.
General approach is to store the ray state at a branch point, trace the
branched ray as normal, then restore the state as necessary before iterating
to the next part of the path. A state machine is used to advance the indirect
loop state, which avoids the need to add any new kernels. Each iteration the
state machine recreates as much state as possible from the stored ray to keep
overall storage down.
Its kind of hard to keep all the different integration loops in sync, so this
needs lots of testing to make sure everything is working correctly. We should
probably start trying to deduplicate the integration loops more now.
Nonbranched BMW is ~2% slower, while classroom is ~2% faster, other scenes
could use more testing still.

Added a roughness parameter for refractions (for scattering of the rays
within an object)
With this, one can create a translucent material with a smooth surface and
with a milky look.
The final refraction roughness has to be calculated using the surface
roughness and the refraction roughness because those two are correlated
for refractions. If a ray hits a rough surface of a translucent material,
it is scattered while entering the surface. Then it is scattered further
within the object. The calculation I'm using is the following:
RefrRoughnessFinal = 1.0 - (1.0 - Roughness) * (1.0 - RefrRoughness)

|
Simplifies code quite a bit, making it shorter and easier to extend.
Currently no functional changes for users, but is required for the
upcoming work of shadow catcher support with OpenCL.
|
|
|
|
Decoupled ray marching is not supported yet.
Transparent shadows are always enabled for volume rendering.
Changes in kernel/bvh and kernel/geom are from Sergey.
This simiplifies code significantly, and prepares it for
record-all transparent shadow function in split kernel.

|
|
|
|
|
When ray hits curve segment with SSS shader it was possible to have
uninitialized hit_P variable used for sampling.
Seems that was a reason of our headache of difference between AVX2
and SSE4 render results here, so now we can revert all the nasty
ifdef-ed inline policies.
|
|
|
|
Not sure why exactly that happened, need a closer look.
|
|
The change didn't fix difference render result on CUDA as i've hoped,
so reverting change for GPU rendering for now.
Sorry for the noise.
|
|
|
|
Very weird, but let's just fall back a bit for now.
