2021-11-24Fix T93352: Material previews lost render samplesSimon Thommes
There are few layers of things which lead to the situation of more noisy material preview: the do-version of the preview.blend did not happen (at least from the Python side as we did not investigate the C side deep). This made Cycles to use default integrator settings for the preview file ever since the Cycles X was merged. Those settings are adaptive sampling with max 4K samples, noise threshold 0.01. Opening the file in Blender 3.0 for edit did run the versioning code which effectively lowered the number of samples used for rendering. This change makes it so the preview file is configured with the exact effective settings as seen by Cycles prior to the file was re-saved (adaptive sampling with the parameters noted above). This fix does not chaneg the fact that the versioning code is not used for preview.blend, it only solves the regression in the quality of previews. The fix is done and reviewed with collaboration with Dalai and Sergey.
2021-11-22Material Preview: Fix Sphere object (squared UV and poles)Dalai Felinto
A good sphere preview material has a 1:1 UV ratio (so we see squares as least distorted as possible), as well as good poles. Square UV: The original sphere expected a 2:1 panorama to be mapped to it. This patch changes that (I scaled Y by 0.5) so that square textures look ok. Poles: The original sphere had a low initial resolution, so no ammount of subdivision would fix the poles. The sphere has a subdivision modifier with 0 resolution. Later (3.1?) I want to try to change the resolution on-the-fly based on whether the material has a displacement map. Old sphere (1.9K vertices): {F11845752, size=500px} New sphere (2.0K vertices): {F11845710, size=500px} Differential Revision: https://developer.blender.org/D13309
2021-08-11Fix T89984: Improve Icon previews reflective and transmissive materials.Jeroen Bakker
Before this commit rendering material icons the floor will is hidden. This reduces the readability of reflective/refractive materials. check patch for additional screenshots and notes. This patch will switch the floor material that uses ray visibility tricks to render a floor for reflective rays. Eevee uses screen space reflections that makes this a different problem. There is nothing else drawn in the scene in screen space so we need a different trick. Using math we convert a reflective ray to UV space and generate a world that projects a checker pattern to infinity. As now the floor is in the world it is being reflected via a cubemap. As the film is transparent the background (including the floor isn't rendered) In the future when Eevee supports vulkan raytracing we can re-evaluate and perhaps remove this approximation. We tried lightprobes but that wasn't able to do the trick. Using the compositor would lead to more memory usage (render layers and intermediate buffers) and slower performance. Solution has been validated with Simon Reviewed By: sybren, Severin Differential Revision: https://developer.blender.org/D11988
2020-03-12EEVEE: Update Preview file with new lightcacheClément Foucault
2019-04-14Render: new material previewWilliam Reynish
* EEVEE support through irradiance volume and light probe. * New shader ball shape (designed by Robin Marin). * New cloth and liquid shapes, removed monkey. * Replace world sphere by toggle to use world for any shape. * Slight bevel on cube. * More subdivision for displacement preview. * Fixed and improved UV mapping for all shapes. * Material icon / asset preview now uses specified shape instead of always a sphere. So for example hair material can be displayed as hair. Ref T57683

2018-06-28Fix material preview for EEVEE/CyclesDalai Felinto
The preview files had all the other collections excluded from the view layer. Although this fix the problem, it probably means we ignored some existing 2.8 files in recent changes. Which is likely fine anyways given that 2.8 is experimental.
2017-04-26Fix material preview for Cycles and BIDalai Felinto
I had to update the .blend files too, and get them to use collections over the nameless old layers.
2012-08-11startup.blend and preview.blend are now converted to C at build time.Campbell Barton
made some changes to startup.c - change default player to internal since its working now. - added new screen for full screen 3d viewport (nice for demo's and navigating) - disable cursor depth option (was enabled by default because of re-used flag)
2009-07-17Colour ManagementMatt Ebb
- 1st stage: Linear Workflow This implements automatic linear workflow in Blender's renderer. With the new Colour Management option on in the Render buttons, all inputs to the renderer and compositor are converted to linear colour space before rendering, and gamma corrected afterwards. In essence, this makes all manual gamma correction with nodes, etc unnecessary, since it's done automatically through the pipeline. It's all explained much better in the notes/doc here, so please have a look: http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Dev:Source/Blender/Architecture/Colour_Management And an example of the sort of difference it makes: http://mke3.net/blender/devel/rendering/b25_colormanagement_test01.jpg This also enables Colour Management in the default B.blend, and changes the default lamp falloff to inverse square, which is more correct, and much easier to use now it's all gamma corrected properly. Next step is to look into profiles/soft proofing for the compositor. Thanks to brecht for reviewing and fixing some oversights!

2008-03-10* Updated the material preview so the 'hair' preview option Matt Ebb
has UVs. Previously, it would show all noisy and messed up when using a UV texture.

2007-11-27ParticlesBrecht Van Lommel
========= Merge of the famous particle patch by Janne Karhu, a full rewrite of the Blender particle system. This includes: - Emitter, Hair and Reactor particle types. - Newtonian, Keyed and Boids physics. - Various particle visualisation and rendering types. - Vertex group and texture control for various properties. - Interpolated child particles from parents. - Hair editing with combing, growing, cutting, .. . - Explode modifier. - Harmonic, Magnetic fields, and multiple falloff types. .. and lots of other things, some more info is here: http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/BlenderDev/Particles_Rewrite http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/BlenderDev/Particles_Rewrite_Doc The new particle system cannot be backwards compatible. Old particle systems are being converted to the new system, but will require tweaking to get them looking the same as before. Point Cache =========== The new system to replace manual baking, based on automatic caching on disk. This is currently used by softbodies and the particle system. See the Cache API section on: http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/BlenderDev/PhysicsSprint Documentation ============= These new features still need good docs for the release logs, help for this is appreciated.
2007-01-14Fix for bug #5680:Brecht Van Lommel
Vertex color node worked only if VCol Paint/Light was enabled. Fixed that, and removed the vertex color node making it part of the geometry node instead. Also, preview.blend had black vertex colors for the sphere, so set them to white like the other primitives.
2006-12-08Preview.blend: made lightgroup "Override" for all lamps, to allowTon Roosendaal

2006-06-09* preview.blend fixesMatt Ebb
The preview.blend now shows raytracing/transparency, and also turns on and off the fake shadow based on the 'shadbuf' setting. Also included an updated preview.blend file to accomodate this.
2006-06-07* Updated the preview render scene .blendMatt Ebb
- Improved lighting and background (also turned off shadows, unnecessary and a potential slowdown in generating the preview) - UV unwrapped the sphere and monkey models, so you can actually see something useful when a texture is mapped to UV - Added a 'hair' preview option (reused sphere icon will be eventually forthcoming)
