2022-05-15Cleanup: Move three mesh editors files to C++Hans Goudey
Simplifies refactoring in D14685, allows use of better data structures.
2022-05-13Cleanup: Use const when retrieving custom data layersHans Goudey
Knowing when layers are retrieved for write access will be essential when adding proper copy-on-write support. This commit makes that clearer by adding `const` where the retrieved data is not modified. Ref T95842

2022-04-21Commit D14179: Revamp Vertex Paint With C++Joseph Eagar
- Verrtex paint mode has been refactored into C++ templates. It now works with both byte and float colors and point & corner attribute domains. - There is a new API for mixing colors (also based on C++ templates). Unlike the existing APIs byte and float colors are interpolated identically. Interpolation does happen in a squared rgb space, this may be changed in the future. - Vertex paint now uses the sculpt undo system. Reviewed By: Brecht Van Lommel. 2022-04-20Cleanup: Rename CD_MLOOPCOL to CD_PROP_BYTE_COLORHans Goudey
The "PROP" in the name reflects its generic status, and removing "LOOP" makes sense because it is no longer associated with just mesh face corners. In general the goal is to remove extra semantic meaning from the custom data types.
2022-04-20Mesh: Avoid unnecessary normal calculation and dirty tagsHans Goudey
This is mostly a cleanup to avoid hardcoding the eager calculation of normals it isn't necessary, by reducing calls to `BKE_mesh_calc_normals` and by removing calls to `BKE_mesh_normals_tag_dirty` when the mesh is newly created and already has dirty normals anyway. This reduces boilerplate code and makes the "dirty by default" state more clear. Any regressions from this commit should be easy to fix, though the lazy calculation is solid enough that none are expected.
2022-04-05Refactor: Unify vertex and sculpt colors into newJoseph Eagar
color attribute system. This commit removes sculpt colors from experimental status and unifies it with vertex colors. It introduces the concept of "color attributes", which are any attributes that represents colors. Color attributes can be represented with byte or floating-point numbers and can be stored in either vertices or face corners. Color attributes share a common namespace (so you can no longer have a floating-point sculpt color attribute and a byte vertex color attribute with the same name). Note: this commit does not include vertex paint mode, which is a separate patch, see: https://developer.blender.org/D14179 Differential Revision: https://developer.blender.org/D12587 Ref D12587
2022-03-29LibOverride: Massive edits to 'editable' IDs checks in editors code.Bastien Montagne
Add new `BKE_id_is_editable` helper in `BKE_lib_id.h`, that supercedes previous check (simple `ID_IS_LINKED()` macro) for many editing cases. This allows to also take into account 'system override' (aka non-editable override) case. Ref: {T95707}.
2022-03-14Auto-generate RNA-structs declarations in `RNA_prototypes.h`Julian Eisel
So far it was needed to declare a new RNA struct to `RNA_access.h` manually. Since 9b298cf3dbec we generate a `RNA_prototypes.h` for RNA property declarations. Now this also includes the RNA struct declarations, so they don't have to be added manually anymore. Differential Revision: https://developer.blender.org/D13862 Reviewed by: brecht, campbellbarton

2022-02-22Fix: Clear mesh runtime cache when adding elementsHans Goudey
Currently the RNA functions to add mesh elements like vertices don't clear the runtime cache of things like triangulation, BVH trees, etc. This is important, since they might be accessed with incorrect sizes. This is split from a fix for T95839.

2022-01-13Refactor: Move normals out of MVert, lazy calculationHans Goudey
As described in T91186, this commit moves mesh vertex normals into a contiguous array of float vectors in a custom data layer, how face normals are currently stored. The main interface is documented in `BKE_mesh.h`. Vertex and face normals are now calculated on-demand and cached, retrieved with an "ensure" function. Since the logical state of a mesh is now "has normals when necessary", they can be retrieved from a `const` mesh. The goal is to use on-demand calculation for all derived data, but leave room for eager calculation for performance purposes (modifier evaluation is threaded, but viewport data generation is not). **Benefits** This moves us closer to a SoA approach rather than the current AoS paradigm. Accessing a contiguous `float3` is much more efficient than retrieving data from a larger struct. The memory requirements for accessing only normals or vertex locations are smaller, and at the cost of more memory usage for just normals, they now don't have to be converted between float and short, which also simplifies code In the future, the remaining items can be removed from `MVert`, leaving only `float3`, which has similar benefits (see T93602). Removing the combination of derived and original data makes it conceptually simpler to only calculate normals when necessary. This is especially important now that we have more opportunities for temporary meshes in geometry nodes. **Performance** In addition to the theoretical future performance improvements by making `MVert == float3`, I've done some basic performance testing on this patch directly. The data is fairly rough, but it gives an idea about where things stand generally. - Mesh line primitive 4m Verts: 1.16x faster (36 -> 31 ms), showing that accessing just `MVert` is now more efficient. - Spring Splash Screen: 1.03-1.06 -> 1.06-1.11 FPS, a very slight change that at least shows there is no regression. - Sprite Fright Snail Smoosh: 3.30-3.40 -> 3.42-3.50 FPS, a small but observable speedup. - Set Position Node with Scaled Normal: 1.36x faster (53 -> 39 ms), shows that using normals in geometry nodes is faster. - Normal Calculation 1.6m Vert Cube: 1.19x faster (25 -> 21 ms), shows that calculating normals is slightly faster now. - File Size of 1.6m Vert Cube: 1.03x smaller (214.7 -> 208.4 MB), Normals are not saved in files, which can help with large meshes. As for memory usage, it may be slightly more in some cases, but I didn't observe any difference in the production files I tested. **Tests** Some modifiers and cycles test results need to be updated with this commit, for two reasons: - The subdivision surface modifier is not responsible for calculating normals anymore. In master, the modifier creates different normals than the result of the `Mesh` normal calculation, so this is a bug fix. - There are small differences in the results of some modifiers that use normals because they are not converted to and from `short` anymore. **Future improvements** - Remove `ModifierTypeInfo::dependsOnNormals`. Code in each modifier already retrieves normals if they are needed anyway. - Copy normals as part of a better CoW system for attributes. - Make more areas use lazy instead of eager normal calculation. - Remove `BKE_mesh_normals_tag_dirty` in more places since that is now the default state of a new mesh. - Possibly apply a similar change to derived face corner normals. 2020-08-27Fix T80159: Custom Normals Averaging crash after clearingPhilipp Oeser
custom split normals data Clearing custom split normals would get rid of the CD_CUSTOMLOOPNORMAL layer - but editing data `lnor_spacearr` would be kept. Adding a CD_CUSTOMLOOPNORMAL layer (if none exists yet) should be done in `edbm_average_normals_exec` / `BKE_editmesh_lnorspace_update` / `BM_lnorspace_update` / `BM_lnorspacearr_store`. The thing is that if the editing data `lnor_spacearr` would still be valid after `Clear Custom Split Normals Data`, blender would happily call `BM_lnorspace_rebuild` instead. Doing that without a CD_CUSTOMLOOPNORMAL layer is asking for trouble. Now clear lnor_spacearr on `Clear Custom Split Normals Data` as well. Thx @mont29 for feedback here. 2020-06-23Sculpt Vertex Colors: Initial implementationPablo Dobarro
Sculpt Vertex Colors is a painting system that runs inside sculpt mode, reusing all its tools and optimizations. This provides much better performance, easier to maintain code and more advanced features (new brush engine, filters, symmetry options, masks and face sets compatibility...). 2019-07-16Fixed crash when adding/removing custom normals from pinned meshSybren A. Stüvel
When a mesh is pinned in the properties panel, Blender crashes when you click the "Add Custom Split Normals Data". The code calls `ob = ED_object_context(C)` which returns NULL when the mesh is pinned in the properties panel, causing a segfault when trying to get the mesh via `ob->data`. A new function `ED_mesh_context(C)` avoids this by first checking whether a mesh was pinned in the context. If not, it checks the pinned object's data. If that's not there, or it's not a mesh, it returns the active object's mesh. Finally it returns NULL if there is no active object, or if the active object is not a mesh object. 2019-03-07Refactor CDData masks, to have one mask per mesh elem type.Bastien Montagne
We already have different storages for cddata of verts, edges etc., 'simply' do the same for the mask flags we use all around Blender code to request some data, or limit some operation to some layers, etc. Reason we need this is that some cddata types (like Normals) are actually shared between verts/polys/loops, and we don’t want to generate clnors everytime we request vnors! As a side note, this also does final fix to T59338, which was the trigger for this patch (need to request computed loop normals for another mesh than evaluated one). 2019-03-05UV/VCol layers creation: add option to not init those new data.Bastien Montagne
`ED_mesh_uv_texture_add()`/`ED_mesh_color_add()` would always either copy data from current active one, or (for UVs), generate default 'valid' UVs for every face. This commit adds an option to not do that, just keeping default values from raw CDLayer creation. It is only used/exposed from RNA API currently. This is especially useful for importer add-ons, since some formats support multiple layers of those kind, as well as 'partial' dataset not explicitely defining values for all mesh items.
