2022-04-19Refactor: Move mesh face dot tag out of MVertHans Goudey
Continuing the refactors described in T93602, this commit moves the face dot tag set by the subdivision surface modifier out of `MVert` to `MeshRuntime`. This clarifies its status as runtime data and allows further refactoring of mesh positions in the future. Before, `BKE_modifiers_uses_subsurf_facedots` was used to check whether subsurf face dots should be drawn, but now we can just check if the tags exist on the mesh. Modifiers that create new new geometry or modify topology will already remove the array by clearing mesh runtime data. Differential Revision: https://developer.blender.org/D14680

2022-02-24Fix T95976: on cage GPU subdivision breaks X-ray selectionKévin Dietrich
When X-ray mode is active the selection is done using the mesh data to select what is closest to the cursor. When GPU subdivision is active with the "show on cage" modifier option, this fails as the mesh used for selection is the unsubdivided one. This creates a subdivision wrapper before running the selection routines to ensure that subdivision is available on the CPU side as well. Differential Revision: https://developer.blender.org/D14188

2022-01-13Refactor: Move normals out of MVert, lazy calculationHans Goudey
As described in T91186, this commit moves mesh vertex normals into a contiguous array of float vectors in a custom data layer, how face normals are currently stored. The main interface is documented in `BKE_mesh.h`. Vertex and face normals are now calculated on-demand and cached, retrieved with an "ensure" function. Since the logical state of a mesh is now "has normals when necessary", they can be retrieved from a `const` mesh. The goal is to use on-demand calculation for all derived data, but leave room for eager calculation for performance purposes (modifier evaluation is threaded, but viewport data generation is not). **Benefits** This moves us closer to a SoA approach rather than the current AoS paradigm. Accessing a contiguous `float3` is much more efficient than retrieving data from a larger struct. The memory requirements for accessing only normals or vertex locations are smaller, and at the cost of more memory usage for just normals, they now don't have to be converted between float and short, which also simplifies code In the future, the remaining items can be removed from `MVert`, leaving only `float3`, which has similar benefits (see T93602). Removing the combination of derived and original data makes it conceptually simpler to only calculate normals when necessary. This is especially important now that we have more opportunities for temporary meshes in geometry nodes. **Performance** In addition to the theoretical future performance improvements by making `MVert == float3`, I've done some basic performance testing on this patch directly. The data is fairly rough, but it gives an idea about where things stand generally. - Mesh line primitive 4m Verts: 1.16x faster (36 -> 31 ms), showing that accessing just `MVert` is now more efficient. - Spring Splash Screen: 1.03-1.06 -> 1.06-1.11 FPS, a very slight change that at least shows there is no regression. - Sprite Fright Snail Smoosh: 3.30-3.40 -> 3.42-3.50 FPS, a small but observable speedup. - Set Position Node with Scaled Normal: 1.36x faster (53 -> 39 ms), shows that using normals in geometry nodes is faster. - Normal Calculation 1.6m Vert Cube: 1.19x faster (25 -> 21 ms), shows that calculating normals is slightly faster now. - File Size of 1.6m Vert Cube: 1.03x smaller (214.7 -> 208.4 MB), Normals are not saved in files, which can help with large meshes. As for memory usage, it may be slightly more in some cases, but I didn't observe any difference in the production files I tested. **Tests** Some modifiers and cycles test results need to be updated with this commit, for two reasons: - The subdivision surface modifier is not responsible for calculating normals anymore. In master, the modifier creates different normals than the result of the `Mesh` normal calculation, so this is a bug fix. - There are small differences in the results of some modifiers that use normals because they are not converted to and from `short` anymore. **Future improvements** - Remove `ModifierTypeInfo::dependsOnNormals`. Code in each modifier already retrieves normals if they are needed anyway. - Copy normals as part of a better CoW system for attributes. - Make more areas use lazy instead of eager normal calculation. - Remove `BKE_mesh_normals_tag_dirty` in more places since that is now the default state of a new mesh. - Possibly apply a similar change to derived face corner normals. 2021-07-23Fix T89393: crash when selecting edges when geometry nodes has "on cage" ↵Jacques Lucke
turned on The core problem is that the geometry nodes modifier sometimes support "mapping" (i.e. it remembers which new vertices correspond to edit mode vertices) and sometimes it does not, depending on what the nodes are doing. Also see rB07ce9910f7cc. The solution here is that the fallback case in `BKE_mesh_foreach_mapped_edge` does not call the callback with "invalid" indices. 2021-06-22Fix bone select failing with end-points outside the viewCampbell Barton
Apply the same fix for T32214 (edge-select failing) to bones which also failed when their end-points were outside of the view. - Add V3D_PROJ_TEST_CLIP_CONTENT support for edit & pose bone iterator and use for selection operators. - Remove unnecessarily complicated checks with pose-mode lasso tagging. - Correct error in pose-mode LassoSelectUserData.is_changed (currently harmless as it's not read back).

2021-06-21Fix T32214: Wireframe edge select fails with verts behind the viewCampbell Barton
This resolves a long standing bug in edge selection (picking, circle, box & lasso). Now when one of the edges vertices fails to project into screen space, the edge is clipped by the viewport to calculate an on-screen location that can be used instead. This isn't default as it may be important for the on the screen location not to be clipped by the viewport.

The old convention was easy to confuse with ScrArea. Part of https://developer.blender.org/T74432. This is mostly a batch rename with some manual fixing. Only single word variable names are changed, no prefixed/suffixed names. Brecht van Lommel and Campbell Barton both gave me a green light for this convention change. Also ran clan clang format on affected files.

2019-07-08Fix T62941 Subdivision Modifier Showing all face dotsClément Foucault
Previously in 2.79 we were using a specialized drawing using derivedMesh. Now the subsurf modifier tag each center vertex as facedot and let the DRWManager pick it up. Some modifiers (deforming ones) do not clear the tag so we can use this technique even if there is deforming modifiers after subsurf modifiers.

2019-03-07Refactor CDData masks, to have one mask per mesh elem type.Bastien Montagne
We already have different storages for cddata of verts, edges etc., 'simply' do the same for the mask flags we use all around Blender code to request some data, or limit some operation to some layers, etc. Reason we need this is that some cddata types (like Normals) are actually shared between verts/polys/loops, and we don’t want to generate clnors everytime we request vnors! As a side note, this also does final fix to T59338, which was the trigger for this patch (need to request computed loop normals for another mesh than evaluated one). 2018-06-05Moved function declarations from BKE_DerivedMesh.h to BKE_mesh_runtime.hSybren A. Stüvel
The function definitions still reside in DerivedMesh.c. Once we're done porting all the DerivedMesh use to Mesh, we'll move the still-relevant functions to mesh_runtime.c. This move is now cumbersome due to shared statically-declared utility functions in DerivedMesh.c

2018-04-16Depsgraph: remove EvaluationContext, pass Depsgraph instead.Brecht Van Lommel
The depsgraph was always created within a fixed evaluation context. Passing both risks the depsgraph and evaluation context not matching, and it complicates the Python API where we'd have to expose both which is not so easy to understand. This also removes the global evaluation context in main, which assumed there to be a single active scene and view layer. Differential Revision: https://developer.blender.org/D3152
2017-08-16Pass EvaluationContext instead of bContextCampbell Barton
2.8x branch added bContext arg in many places, pass eval-context instead since its not simple to reason about what what nested functions do when they can access and change almost anything. Also use const to prevent unexpected modifications. This fixes crash loading files with shadows, since off-screen buffers use a NULL context for rendering.

2013-08-19Move bevel list and path from Curve to Object datablockSergey Sharybin
I know this is not so much nice to have this guys hanging around in a general Object datablock and ideally they better be wrapped around into a structure like DerivedMesh or something like this. But this is pure runtime only stuff and we could re-wrap them around later. Main purpose of this is making curves more thread safe, so no separate threads will ever start freeing the same path or the same bevel list. It also makes sense because path and bevel shall include deformation coming from modifiers which are applying on pre-tesselation point and different objects could have different set of modifiers. This used to be really confusing in the past and now data which depends on object is stored in an object, making things clear for understanding even. This doesn't make curve code fully thread-safe due to pre-tesselation modifiers still modifies actual nurbs and lock is still needed in makeDispListsCurveTypes, but this change makes usage of paths safe for threading. Once modifiers will stop modifying actual nurbs, curves will be fully safe for threading. Actually, this commit also contains wrapping runtime curve members into own structure This allows easier assignment on file loading, keeps curve- specific runtime data grouped and saves couple of bytes in Object for non-curve types. -- svn merge -r57938:57939 ^/branches/soc-2013-depsgraph_mt svn merge -r57957:57958^/branches/soc-2013-depsgraph_mt
2013-07-23optimization: only calculate the normals for passing into derivedMesh ↵Campbell Barton
foreachMappedVert/foreachMappedFaceCenter when needed, this means in editmode with wire draw, face and vertex normals don't have to be calculated at all. in most cases the normals are not used so add a flag that makes calculating them only for functions that need them. also fix face normal calculation for CDDM, was using quad calculation for ngons too.
