2022-09-09Cleanup: Simplify BKE_mesh_nomain_to_meshHans Goudey
- Remove "take ownership" argument which was confusing and always true - The argument made ownership very confusing - Better to avoid boolean arguments that switch a function's purpose - Remove "mask" argument which was basically wrong and not used properly - "EVERYTHING" was used because developers are wary of removing data - Instead use `CD_MASK_MESH` for its purpose of original mesh data - Remove use of shallow copied temporary mesh, which is unnecessary now - Split shape key processing into separate functions and use C++ types - Copy fields explicitly rather than using memcpy for the whole struct - Use higher level functions and avoid redundant code - The whole idea is pretty simple and can be built from standard logic - Adjust `CustomData` logic to be consistent with "assign" expectations - Clear the layer data from the source, and moves the anonymous ID Differential Revision: https://developer.blender.org/D15857
2022-09-08Cleanup: prefer terms verts/polys over vertices/polygonsCampbell Barton
Follows existing naming for the most part, also use "num" as a suffix in some instances (following our naming conventions).
2022-09-07Cleanup: Tweak naming for recently added mesh accessorsHans Goudey
Use `verts` instead of `vertices` and `polys` instead of `polygons` in the API added in 05952aa94d33eeb50. This aligns better with existing naming where the shorter names are much more common.
2022-09-05Mesh: Remove redundant custom data pointersHans Goudey
For copy-on-write, we want to share attribute arrays between meshes where possible. Mutable pointers like `Mesh.mvert` make that difficult by making ownership vague. They also make code more complex by adding redundancy. The simplest solution is just removing them and retrieving layers from `CustomData` as needed. Similar changes have already been applied to curves and point clouds (e9f82d3dc7ee, 410a6efb747f). Removing use of the pointers generally makes code more obvious and more reusable. Mesh data is now accessed with a C++ API (`Mesh::edges()` or `Mesh::edges_for_write()`), and a C API (`BKE_mesh_edges(mesh)`). The CoW changes this commit makes possible are described in T95845 and T95842, and started in D14139 and D14140. The change also simplifies the ongoing mesh struct-of-array refactors from T95965. **RNA/Python Access Performance** Theoretically, accessing mesh elements with the RNA API may become slower, since the layer needs to be found on every random access. However, overhead is already high enough that this doesn't make a noticible differenc, and performance is actually improved in some cases. Random access can be up to 10% faster, but other situations might be a bit slower. Generally using `foreach_get/set` are the best way to improve performance. See the differential revision for more discussion about Python performance. Cycles has been updated to use raw pointers and the internal Blender mesh types, mostly because there is no sense in having this overhead when it's already compiled with Blender. In my tests this roughly halves the Cycles mesh creation time (0.19s to 0.10s for a 1 million face grid). Differential Revision: https://developer.blender.org/D15488
2022-08-30Attributes: Improve custom data initialization optionsHans Goudey
When allocating new `CustomData` layers, often we do redundant initialization of arrays. For example, it's common that values are allocated, set to their default value, and then set to some other value. This is wasteful, and it negates the benefits of optimizations to the allocator like D15082. There are two reasons for this. The first is array-of-structs storage that makes it annoying to initialize values manually, and the second is confusing options in the Custom Data API. This patch addresses the latter. The `CustomData` "alloc type" options are rearranged. Now, besides the options that use existing layers, there are two remaining: * `CD_SET_DEFAULT` sets the default value. * Usually zeroes, but for colors this is white (how it was before). * Should be used when you add the layer but don't set all values. * `CD_CONSTRUCT` refers to the "default construct" C++ term. * Only necessary or defined for non-trivial types like vertex groups. * Doesn't do anything for trivial types like `int` or `float3`. * Should be used every other time, when all values will be set. The attribute API's `AttributeInit` types are updated as well. To update code, replace `CD_CALLOC` with `CD_SET_DEFAULT` and `CD_DEFAULT` with `CD_CONSTRUCT`. This doesn't cause any functional changes yet. Follow-up commits will change to avoid initializing new layers where the correctness is clear. 2022-04-20Mesh: Avoid unnecessary normal calculation and dirty tagsHans Goudey
This is mostly a cleanup to avoid hardcoding the eager calculation of normals it isn't necessary, by reducing calls to `BKE_mesh_calc_normals` and by removing calls to `BKE_mesh_normals_tag_dirty` when the mesh is newly created and already has dirty normals anyway. This reduces boilerplate code and makes the "dirty by default" state more clear. Any regressions from this commit should be easy to fix, though the lazy calculation is solid enough that none are expected.

2022-02-24Merge branch 'blender-v3.1-release'Hans Goudey
2022-02-24Fix: Crash switching between sculpt and edit modeHans Goudey
Also fix a couple other places where normals layers weren't properly tagged dirty or reallocated when the mesh changes. Caused by cfa53e0fbeed7178. When the size of a mesh changes, the normal layers need to be reallocated. There were a couple of places that cleared other runtime data with `BKE_mesh_runtime_clear_geometry` but didn't deal with normals properly. Clearing the runtime "geometry" is different from clearing the normals, because sometimes the size of the normal layers doesn't have to change, in which case simply tagging them dirty is fine.

2021-06-24Depsgraph: support flushing parameters without a full COW updateCampbell Barton
Avoid computationally expensive copying operations when only some settings have been modified. This is done by adding support for updating parameters without tagging for copy-on-write. Currently only mesh data blocks are supported, other data-blocks can be added individually. This prepares for changing values such as edit-mesh auto-smooth angle in edit-mode without duplicating all mesh-data. The benefit will only be seen when the user interface no longer tags all ID's for copy on write updates. ID_RECALC_GEOMETRY_ALL_MODES has been added to support situations where non edit-mode geometry is modified in edit-mode. While this isn't something user are likely to do, Python scripts may change the underlying mesh. Reviewed By: sergey Ref D11377

This calculated tessfaces, not loop-triangles. Remove this since they aren't accessible from RNA anymore.
2019-07-31Added BKE_mesh_clear_geometry() functionSybren A. Stüvel
This function makes it possible to clear/remove/nuke all the geometry in a mesh, allowing functions like `Mesh.from_python()` to construct a new mesh in its place. Without this function, code like in T67627 have to allocate a new Mesh datablock, fill that, and swap out the old Mesh for the new one. This introduces issues when exporting, as the new mesh could be seen by an exporter as unrelated to the old one. Shape keys are not freed by this function. Freeing those would require tagging the depsgraph for relations update, which is an expensive operation. They should be removed explicitly if necessary. Material slots are also not cleared by this function, in the same way that they are not cleared when manually removing all geometry from a mesh. The `BKE_mesh_clear_geometry()` function is available in Python as `mesh.clear_geometry()`. Reviewed by: mont29, brecht Differential Revision: https://developer.blender.org/D5373

2018-10-10Python API: add loop triangles access, remove tessfaces.Brecht Van Lommel
Loop triangles are tessellated triangles create from polygons, for renderers or exporters that need to match Blender's polygon tesselation exactly. These are a read-only runtime cache. Tessfaces are a legacy data structure from before Blender supported n-gons, and were already mostly removed from the C code. Details on porting code to loop triangles is in the release notes. New logic of split_faces was leaving mesh in a proper state from Blender's point of view, but Cycles wanted loop normals to be "flushed" to vertex normals. Now we do such a flush from Cycles side again, so we don't leave bad meshes behind. Thanks Bastien for assistance here!

2016-12-12Refactor RNA property: split flags in property flags, parameter flags, and ↵Bastien Montagne
internal flags. This gives us 9 flags available again for properties (we had none anymore), and also makes things slightly cleaner. To simplify (and make more clear the differences between mere properties and function parameters), also added RNA_def_parameter_flags function (and its clear counterpart), to be used instead of RNA_def_property_flag for function parameters. This patch is also a big cleanup (some RNA function definitions were still using 'prop' PropertyRNA pointer, etc.). And yes, am aware this will be annoying for all branches, but we really need to get new flags available for properties (will need at least one for override, etc.). 2015-03-13Add an option to mesh.calc_tessface() to get rid of polygons and loopsSergey Sharybin
The purpose of this change is to add extra possibility to render engines and export scripts to reduce peak memory footprint during their operation. This new argument should be used with care since it'll leave mesh in not really compatible with blender format, but it's ok to be used on temp meshes. Unfortunately, it's hard to get scene where it'll show huge benefit because in my tests with cycles peak memory is reached in MEM_printmemlist_stats(). However, in the file with sintel dragon it gives around 1gig of memory benefit after removing the polys which would allow other heavy to compute stuff such as hair (or even pointiness calculation) to not be a peak memory usage. In any case, this change is nice to have IMO, and only means more parts of scene export code should be optimized memory-wise.
