2023-09-25revision: make pseudo-opt flags read via stdin behave consistentlyPatrick Steinhardt
When reading revisions from stdin via git-rev-list(1)'s `--stdin` option then these revisions never honor flags like `--not` which have been passed on the command line. Thus, an invocation like e.g. `git rev-list --all --not --stdin` will not treat all revisions read from stdin as uninteresting. While this behaviour may be surprising to a user, it's been this way ever since it has been introduced via 42cabc341c4 (Teach rev-list an option to read revs from the standard input., 2006-09-05). With that said, in c40f0b7877 (revision: handle pseudo-opts in `--stdin` mode, 2023-06-15) we have introduced a new mode to read pseudo opts from standard input where this behaviour is a lot more confusing. If you pass `--not` via stdin, it will: - Influence subsequent revisions or pseudo-options passed on the command line. - Influence pseudo-options passed via standard input. - _Not_ influence normal revisions passed via standard input. This behaviour is extremely inconsistent and bound to cause confusion. While it would be nice to retroactively change the behaviour for how `--not` and `--stdin` behave together, chances are quite high that this would break existing scripts that expect the current behaviour that has been around for many years by now. This is thus not really a viable option to explore to fix the inconsistency. Instead, we change the behaviour of how pseudo-opts read via standard input influence the flags such that the effect is fully localized. With this change, when reading `--not` via standard input, it will: - _Not_ influence subsequent revisions or pseudo-options passed on the command line, which is a change in behaviour. - Influence pseudo-options passed via standard input. - Influence normal revisions passed via standard input, which is a change in behaviour. Thus, all flags read via standard input are fully self-contained to that standard input, only. While this is a breaking change as well, the behaviour has only been recently introduced with Git v2.42.0. Furthermore, the current behaviour can be regarded as a simple bug. With that in mind it feels like the right thing to retroactively change it and make the behaviour sane. 2023-06-15revision: handle pseudo-opts in `--stdin` modePatrick Steinhardt
While both git-rev-list(1) and git-log(1) support `--stdin`, it only accepts commits and files. Most notably, it is impossible to pass any of the pseudo-opts like `--all`, `--glob=` or others via stdin. This makes it hard to use this function in certain scripted scenarios, like when one wants to support queries against specific revisions, but also against reference patterns. While this is theoretically possible by using arguments, this may run into issues once we hit platform limits with sufficiently large queries. And because `--stdin` cannot handle pseudo-opts, the only alternative would be to use a mixture of arguments and standard input, which is cumbersome. Implement support for handling pseudo-opts in both commands to support this usecase better. One notable restriction here is that `--stdin` only supports "stuck" arguments in the form of `--glob=foo`. This is because "unstuck" arguments would also require us to read the next line, which would add quite some complexity to the code. This restriction should be fine for scripted usage though. At first glance, the names given by "rev-list --objects" seem like a good way to see which paths are present in a set of commits. But there are some subtle gotchas there. We do not document the format of the names at all, so let's do so, along with warning of these problems. I intentionally did not document the exact format of the names here, as I don't think it's something we want people to rely on (though I doubt in practice that we'd change it at this point). Though all of this is historically tied to "--objects", these days we have a separate "--object-names" flag which can turn the names off or on. So I put the detailed documentation there, but added a note from --objects (which did not otherwise mention the names at all, even though they are on by default). With roughly 800 remotes all fetching into their own refs/remotes/$REMOTE/* island, the connectivity check[1] gets expensive for each fetch on systems which lack sufficient RAM to cache objects. The documentation mistakenly said that the default format was similar to RFC 2822 format and tried to specify it by enumerating differences, which had two problems: * There are some more differences from the 2822 format that are not mentioned; worse yet * The default format is not modeled after RFC 2822 format at all. As can be seen in f80cd783 (date.c: add "show_date()" function., 2005-05-06), it is a derivative of ctime(3) format. 2022-11-18revision: add new parameter to exclude hidden refsPatrick Steinhardt
Users can optionally hide refs from remote users in git-upload-pack(1), git-receive-pack(1) and others via the `transfer.hideRefs`, but there is not an easy way to obtain the list of all visible or hidden refs right now. We'll require just that though for a performance improvement in our connectivity check. Add a new option `--exclude-hidden=` that excludes any hidden refs from the next pseudo-ref like `--all` or `--branches`. 2022-04-23log: "--since-as-filter" option is a non-terminating "--since" variantMiklos Vajna
The "--since=<time>" option of "git log" limits the commits displayed by the command by stopping the traversal once it sees a commit whose timestamp is older than the given time and not digging further into its parents. This is OK in a history where a commit always has a newer timestamp than any of its parents'. Once you see a commit older than the given <time>, all ancestor commits of it are even older than the time anyway. It poses, however, a problem when there is a commit with a wrong timestamp that makes it appear older than its parents. Stopping traversal at the "incorrectly old" commit will hide its ancestors that are newer than that wrong commit and are newer than the cut-off time given with the --since option. --max-age and --after being the synonyms to --since, they share the same issue. Add a new "--since-as-filter" option that is a variant of "--since=<time>". Instead of stopping the traversal to hide an old enough commit and its all ancestors, exclude commits with an old timestamp from the output but still keep digging the history. Without other traversal stopping options, this will force the command in "git log" family to dig down the history to the root. It may be an acceptable cost for a small project with short history and many commits with screwy timestamps. It is quite unlikely for us to add traversal stopper other than since, so have this as a --since-as-filter option, rather than a separate --as-filter, that would be probably more confusing. It is useful to know when a branch first diverged in history from some integration branch in order to be able to enumerate the user's local changes. However, these local changes can include arbitrary merges, so it is necessary to ignore this merge structure when finding the divergence point. In order to do this, teach the "rev-list" family to accept "--exclude-first-parent-only", which restricts the traversal of excluded commits to only follow first parent links. -A-----E-F-G--main \ / / B-C-D--topic In this example, the goal is to return the set {B, C, D} which represents a topic branch that has been merged into main branch. `git rev-list topic ^main` will end up returning no commits since excluding main will end up traversing the commits on topic as well. `git rev-list --exclude-first-parent-only topic ^main` however will return {B, C, D} as desired. Add docs for the new flag, and clarify the doc for --first-parent to indicate that it applies to traversing the set of included commits only. In a history with 10 single strand of pearls, 1-->2-->3--...->7-->8-->9-->10 asking "rev-list --unsorted-input 1 10 --not 9 8 7 6 5 4" fails to paint the bottom 1 uninteresting as the traversal stops, without completing the propagation of uninteresting bit starting at 4 down through 3 and 2 to 1.
2021-11-04strbuf_addftime(): handle "%s" manuallyJeff King
The strftime() function has a non-standard "%s" extension, which prints the number of seconds since the epoch. But the "struct tm" we get has already been adjusted for a particular time zone; going back to an epoch time requires knowing that zone offset. Since strftime() doesn't take such an argument, round-tripping to a "struct tm" and back to the "%s" format may produce the wrong value (off by tz_offset seconds). Since we're already passing in the zone offset courtesy of c3fbf81a85 (strbuf: let strbuf_addftime handle %z and %Z itself, 2017-06-15), we can use that same value to adjust our epoch seconds accordingly. Note that the description above makes it sound like strftime()'s "%s" is useless (and really, the issue is shared by mktime(), which is what strftime() would use under the hood). But it gets the two cases for which it's designed correct: - the result of gmtime() will have a zero offset, so no adjustment is necessary - the result of localtime() will be offset by the local zone offset, and mktime() and strftime() are defined to assume this offset when converting back (there's actually some magic here; some implementations record this in the "struct tm", but we can't portably access or manipulate it. But they somehow "know" whether a "struct tm" is from gmtime() or localtime()). This latter point means that "format-local:%s" actually works correctly already, because in that case we rely on the system routines due to 6eced3ec5e (date: use localtime() for "-local" time formats, 2017-06-15). Our problem comes when trying to show times in the author's zone, as the system routines provide no mechanism for converting in non-local zones. So in those cases we have a "struct tm" that came from gmtime(), but has been manipulated according to our offset. The tests cover the broken round-trip by formatting "%s" for a time in a non-system timezone. We use the made-up "+1234" here, which has two advantages. One, we know it won't ever be the real system zone (and so we're actually testing a case that would break). And two, since it has a minute component, we're testing the full decoding of the +HHMM zone into a number of seconds. Likewise, we test the "-1234" variant to make sure there aren't any sign mistakes. There's one final test, which covers "format-local:%s". As noted, this already passes, but it's important to check that we didn't regress this case. In particular, the caller in show_date() is relying on localtime() to have done the zone adjustment, independent of any tz_offset we compute ourselves. These should match up, since our local_tzoffset() is likewise built around localtime(). But it would be easy for a caller to forget to pass in a correct tz_offset to strbuf_addftime(). Fortunately show_date() does this correctly (it has to because of the existing handling of %z), and the test continues to pass. 2021-08-09connected: do not sort input revisionsPatrick Steinhardt
In order to compute whether objects reachable from a set of tips are all connected, we do a revision walk with these tips as positive references and `--not --all`. `--not --all` will cause the revision walk to load all preexisting references as uninteresting, which can be very expensive in repositories with many references. Benchmarking the git-rev-list(1) command highlights that by far the most expensive single phase is initial sorting of the input revisions: after all references have been loaded, we first sort commits by author date. In a real-world repository with about 2.2 million references, it makes up about 40% of the total runtime of git-rev-list(1). Ultimately, the connectivity check shouldn't really bother about the order of input revisions at all. We only care whether we can actually walk all objects until we hit the cut-off point. So sorting the input is a complete waste of time. Introduce a new "--unsorted-input" flag to git-rev-list(1) which will cause it to not sort the commits and adjust the connectivity check to always pass the flag. This results in the following speedups, executed in a clone of gitlab-org/gitlab [1]: Benchmark #1: git rev-list --objects --quiet --not --all --not $(cat newrev) Time (mean ± σ): 7.639 s ± 0.065 s [User: 7.304 s, System: 0.335 s] Range (min … max): 7.543 s … 7.742 s 10 runs Benchmark #2: git rev-list --unsorted-input --objects --quiet --not --all --not $newrev Time (mean ± σ): 4.995 s ± 0.044 s [User: 4.657 s, System: 0.337 s] Range (min … max): 4.909 s … 5.048 s 10 runs Summary 'git rev-list --unsorted-input --objects --quiet --not --all --not $(cat newrev)' ran 1.53 ± 0.02 times faster than 'git rev-list --objects --quiet --not --all --not $newrev' [1]: https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab.git. 2021-07-12rev-list: add option for --pretty=format without headerbrian m. carlson
In general, we encourage users to use plumbing commands, like git rev-list, over porcelain commands, like git log, when scripting. However, git rev-list has one glaring problem that prevents it from being used in certain cases: when --pretty is used with a custom format, it always prints out a line containing "commit" and the object ID. This makes it unsuitable for many scripting needs, and forces users to use git log instead. While we can't change this behavior for backwards compatibility, we can add an option to suppress this behavior, so let's do so, and call it "--no-commit-header". Additionally, add the corresponding positive option to switch it back on. Note that this option doesn't affect the built-in formats, only custom formats. This is exactly the same behavior as users already have from git log and is what most users will be used to. When providing an object filter, it is currently impossible to also filter provided items. E.g. when executing `git rev-list HEAD` , the commit this reference points to will be treated as user-provided and is thus excluded from the filtering mechanism. This makes it harder than necessary to properly use the new `--filter=object:type` filter given that even if the user wants to only see blobs, he'll still see commits of provided references. Improve this by introducing a new `--filter-provided-objects` option to the git-rev-parse(1) command. If given, then all user-provided references will be subject to filtering. While it already is possible to filter objects by some criteria in git-rev-list(1), it is not yet possible to filter out only a specific type of objects. This makes some filters less useful. The `blob:limit` filter for example filters blobs such that only those which are smaller than the given limit are returned. But it is unfit to ask only for these smallish blobs, given that git-rev-list(1) will continue to print tags, commits and trees. Now that we have the infrastructure in place to also filter tags and commits, we can improve this situation by implementing a new filter which selects objects based on their type. Above query can thus trivially be implemented with the following command: $ git rev-list --objects --filter=object:type=blob \ --filter=blob:limit=200 Furthermore, this filter allows to optimize for certain other cases: if for example only tags or commits have been selected, there is no need to walk down trees. 2021-02-11rev-list: add --disk-usage option for calculating disk usageJeff King
It can sometimes be useful to see which refs are contributing to the overall repository size (e.g., does some branch have a bunch of objects not found elsewhere in history, which indicates that deleting it would shrink the size of a clone). You can find that out by generating a list of objects, getting their sizes from cat-file, and then summing them, like: git rev-list --objects --no-object-names main..branch git cat-file --batch-check='%(objectsize:disk)' | perl -lne '$total += $_; END { print $total }' Though note that the caveats from git-cat-file(1) apply here. We "blame" base objects more than their deltas, even though the relationship could easily be flipped. Still, it can be a useful rough measure. But one problem is that it's slow to run. Teaching rev-list to sum up the sizes can be much faster for two reasons: 1. It skips all of the piping of object names and sizes. 2. If bitmaps are in use, for objects that are in the bitmapped packfile we can skip the oid_object_info() lookup entirely, and just ask the revindex for the on-disk size. This patch implements a --disk-usage option which produces the same answer in a fraction of the time. Here are some timings using a clone of torvalds/linux: [rev-list piped to cat-file, no bitmaps] $ time git rev-list --objects --no-object-names --all | git cat-file --buffer --batch-check='%(objectsize:disk)' | perl -lne '$total += $_; END { print $total }' 1459938510 real 0m29.635s user 0m38.003s sys 0m1.093s [internal, no bitmaps] $ time git rev-list --disk-usage --objects --all 1459938510 real 0m31.262s user 0m30.885s sys 0m0.376s Even though the wall-clock time is slightly worse due to parallelism, notice the CPU savings between the two. We saved 21% of the CPU just by avoiding the pipes. But the real win is with bitmaps. For "--all", that answer will correspond closely to "du objects/pack", of course. 2020-07-29doc/git-log: move "Diff Formatting" from rev-list-optionsJeff King
Our rev-list-options.txt include has a "Diff Formatting" section, but it is ifndef'd out for all manpages except git-log. And a few bits of the text are rather out of date. We say "some of these options are specific to git-rev-list". That's obviously silly since we (even before this patch) show the content only for git-log. But moreover, it's not true; each of the listed options is meaningful for other diff commands. We also say "...however other diff options may be given. See git-diff-files for more options." But there's no need to do so; git-log already has a "Common Diff Options" section which includes diff-options.txt. So let's move these options over to git-log and put them with the other diff options, giving a single "diff" section for the git-log documentation. The "-m" option sets revs->ignore_merges to "0", but there's no way to undo it. This probably isn't something anybody overly cares about, since "1" is already the default, but it will serve as an escape hatch when we flip the default for ignore_merges to "0" in more situations. We'll also add a few extra niceties: - initialize the value to "-1" to indicate "not set", and then resolve it to the normal 0/1 bool in setup_revisions(). This lets any tweak functions, as well as setup_revisions() itself, avoid clobbering the user's preference (which until now they couldn't actually express). - since we now have --no-diff-merges, let's add the matching --diff-merges, which is just a synonym for "-m". Then we don't even need to document --no-diff-merges separately; it countermands the long form of "-m" in the usual way. The explanation of the `--show-pulls` option added in commit 8d049e182e ("revision: --show-pulls adds helpful merges", 2020-04-10) consists of several paragraphs and we use "+" throughout to tie them together in one long chain of list continuations. Only thing is, we're not in any kind of list, so these pluses end up being rendered literally. The preceding few paragraphs describe `--ancestry-path` and there we *do* have a list, since we've started one with `--ancestry-path::`. In fact, we have several such lists for all the various history-simplifying options we're discussing earlier in this file. Thus, we're missing a list both from a consistency point of view and from a practical rendering standpoint. Let's start a list for `--show-pulls` where we start actually discussing the option, and keep the paragraphs preceding it out of that list. The default file history simplification of "git log -- <path>" or "git rev-list -- <path>" focuses on providing the smallest set of commits that first contributed a change. The revision walk greatly restricts the set of walked commits by visiting only the first TREESAME parent of a merge commit, when one exists. This means that portions of the commit-graph are not walked, which can be a performance benefit, but can also "hide" commits that added changes but were ignored by a merge resolution. The --full-history option modifies this by walking all commits and reporting a merge commit as "interesting" if it has _any_ parent that is not TREESAME. This tends to be an over-representation of important commits, especially in an environment where most merge commits are created by pull request completion. Suppose we have a commit A and we create a commit B on top that changes our file. When we merge the pull request, we create a merge commit M. If no one else changed the file in the first-parent history between M and A, then M will not be TREESAME to its first parent, but will be TREESAME to B. Thus, the simplified history will be "B". However, M will appear in the --full-history mode. However, suppose that a number of topics T1, T2, ..., Tn were created based on commits C1, C2, ..., Cn between A and M as follows: A----C1----C2--- ... ---Cn----M------P1---P2--- ... ---Pn \ \ \ \ / / / / \ \__.. \ \/ ..__T1 / Tn \ \__.. /\ ..__T2 / \_____________________B \____________________/ If the commits T1, T2, ... Tn did not change the file, then all of P1 through Pn will be TREESAME to their first parent, but not TREESAME to their second. This means that all of those merge commits appear in the --full-history view, with edges that immediately collapse into the lower history without introducing interesting single-parent commits. The --simplify-merges option was introduced to remove these extra merge commits. By noticing that the rewritten parents are reachable from their first parents, those edges can be simplified away. Finally, the commits now look like single-parent commits that are TREESAME to their "only" parent. Thus, they are removed and this issue does not cause issues anymore. However, this also ends up removing the commit M from the history view! Even worse, the --simplify-merges option requires walking the entire history before returning a single result. Many Git users are using Git alongside a Git service that provides code storage alongside a code review tool commonly called "Pull Requests" or "Merge Requests" against a target branch. When these requests are accepted and merged, they typically create a merge commit whose first parent is the previous branch tip and the second parent is the tip of the topic branch used for the request. This presents a valuable order to the parents, but also makes that merge commit slightly special. Users may want to see not only which commits changed a file, but which pull requests merged those commits into their branch. In the previous example, this would mean the users want to see the merge commit "M" in addition to the single- parent commit "C". Users are even more likely to want these merge commits when they use pull requests to merge into a feature branch before merging that feature branch into their trunk. In some sense, users are asking for the "first" merge commit to bring in the change to their branch. As long as the parent order is consistent, this can be handled with the following rule: Include a merge commit if it is not TREESAME to its first parent, but is TREESAME to a later parent. These merges look like the merge commits that would result from running "git pull <topic>" on a main branch. Thus, the option to show these commits is called "--show-pulls". This has the added benefit of showing the commits created by closing a pull request or merge request on any of the Git hosting and code review platforms. To test these options, extend the standard test example to include a merge commit that is not TREESAME to its first parent. It is surprising that that option was not already in the example, as it is instructive. In particular, this extension demonstrates a common issue with file history simplification. When a user resolves a merge conflict using "-Xours" or otherwise ignoring one side of the conflict, they create a TREESAME edge that probably should not be TREESAME. This leads users to become frustrated and complain that "my change disappeared!" In my experience, showing them history with --full-history and --simplify-merges quickly reveals the problematic merge. As mentioned, this option is expensive to compute. The --show-pulls option _might_ show the merge commit (usually titled "resolving conflicts") more quickly. Of course, this depends on the user having the correct parent order, which is backwards when using "git pull master" from a topic branch. There are some special considerations when combining the --show-pulls option with --simplify-merges. This requires adding a new PULL_MERGE object flag to store the information from the initial TREESAME comparisons. This helps avoid dropping those commits in later filters. This is covered by a test, including how the parents can be simplified. Since "struct object" has already ruined its 32-bit alignment by using 33 bits across parsed, type, and flags member, let's not make it worse. PULL_MERGE is used in revision.c with the same value (1u<<15) as REACHABLE in commit-graph.c. The REACHABLE flag is only used when writing a commit-graph file, and a revision walk using --show-pulls does not happen in the same process. Care must be taken in the future to ensure this remains the case. Update Documentation/rev-list-options.txt with significant details around this option. This requires updating the example in the History Simplification section to demonstrate some of the problems with TREESAME second parents. This is described in Documentation/SubmittingPatches as If you want to reference a previous commit in the history of a stable branch, use the format "abbreviated hash (subject, date)", like this: .... Commit f86a374 (pack-bitmap.c: fix a memleak, 2015-03-30) noticed that ... .... Since this format is so commonly used, standardize it as a pretty format. The tests that are implemented essentially show that the format-string does not change in response to various log options. This is useful because, for future developers, it shows that we've considered the limitations of the "canned format-string" approach and we are fine with them. When we receive a remote ref update to sha1 "X", we want to check that we have all of the objects needed by "X". We can assume that our repository is not currently corrupted, and therefore if we have a ref pointing at "Y", we have all of its objects. So we can stop our traversal from "X" as soon as we hit "Y". If we make the same non-corruption assumption about any repositories we use to store alternates, then we can also use their ref tips to shorten the traversal. This is especially useful when cloning with "--reference", as we otherwise do not have any local refs to check against, and have to traverse the whole history, even though the other side may have sent us few or no objects. Allow combining of multiple filters by simply repeating the --filter flag. Before this patch, the user had to combine them in a single flag somewhat awkwardly (e.g. --filter=combine:FOO+BAR), including URL-encoding the individual filters. To make this work, in the --filter flag parsing callback, rather than error out when we detect that the filter_options struct is already populated, we modify it in-place to contain the added sub-filter. The existing sub-filter becomes the lhs of the combined filter, and the next sub-filter becomes the rhs. We also have to URL-encode the LHS and RHS sub-filters. We can simplify the operation if the LHS is already a combine: filter. In that case, we just append the URL-encoded RHS sub-filter to the LHS spec to get the new spec. If someone wants to use as a filter a sparse file that is in the repository, something like "--filter=sparse:oid=<ref>:<path>" already works. So 'sparse:path' is only interesting if the sparse file is not in the repository. In this case though the current implementation has a big security issue, as it makes it possible to ask the server to read any file, like for example /etc/password, and to explore the filesystem, as well as individual lines of files. If someone is interested in using a sparse file that is not in the repository as a filter, then at the minimum a config option, such as "uploadpack.sparsePathFilter", should be implemented first to restrict the directory from which the files specified by 'sparse:path' can be read. For now though, let's just disable 'sparse:path' filters.
