In 95c11ecc73 ("Fix error-prone fill_directory() API; make it only
return matches", 2020-04-01), we taught `fill_directory()`, or more
specifically `treat_path()`, to check against any pathspecs so that we
could simplify the callers.
But in doing so, we added a slightly-too-early return for the "excluded"
case. We end up not checking the pathspecs, meaning we return
`path_excluded` when maybe we should return `path_none`. As a result,
`git status --ignored -- pathspec` might show paths that don't actually
match "pathspec".
Move the "excluded" check down to after we've checked any pathspecs.

Our optimization to avoid calling into read_directory_recursive() when
all pathspecs have a common leading directory mean that we need to match
the logic that read_directory_recursive() would use if we had just
called it from the root. Since it does more than call treat_path() we
need to copy that same logic.
Alternatively, we could try to change treat_path to return path_recurse
for an untracked directory under the given special circumstances that
this logic checks for, but a simple switch results in many test failures
such as 'git clean -d' not wiping out untracked but empty directories.
To work around that, we'd need the caller of treat_path to check for
path_recurse and sometimes special case it into path_untracked. In
other words, we'd still have extra logic in both places.
Needing to duplicate logic like this means it is guaranteed someone will
eventually need to make further changes and forget to update both
locations. It is tempting to just nuke the leading_directory special
casing to avoid such bugs and simplify the code, but unpack_trees'
verify_clean_subdirectory() also calls read_directory() and does so with
a non-empty leading path, so I'm hesitant to try to restructure further.
Add obnoxious warnings to treat_leading_path() and
read_directory_recursive() to try to warn people of such problems.

Commit be8a84c52669 ("dir.c: make 'git-status --ignored' work within
leading directories", 2013-04-15) noted that
git status --ignored <SOMEPATH>
would not list ignored files and directories within <SOMEPATH> if
<SOMEPATH> was untracked, and modified the behavior to make it show
them. However, it did so via a hack that broke consistency; it would
show paths under <SOMEPATH> differently than a simple
git status --ignored | grep <SOMEPATH>
would show them. A correct fix is slightly more involved, and
complicated slightly by this hack, so we revert this commit (but keep
corrected versions of the testcases) and will later fix the original
bug with a subsequent patch.
Some history may be helpful:
A very, very similar case to the commit we are reverting was raised in
commit 48ffef966c76 ("ls-files: fix overeager pathspec optimization",
2010-01-08); but it actually went in somewhat the opposite direction. In
that commit, it mentioned how
git ls-files -o --exclude-standard t/
used to show untracked files under t/ even when t/ was ignored, and then
changed the behavior to stop showing untracked files under an ignored
directory. More importantly, this commit considered keeping this
behavior but noted that it would be inconsistent with the behavior when
multiple pathspecs were specified and thus rejected it.
The reason for this whole inconsistency when one pathspec is specified
versus zero or two is because common prefixes of pathspecs are sent
through a different set of checks (in treat_leading_path()) than normal
file/directory traversal (those go through read_directory_recursive()
and treat_path()). As such, for consistency, one needs to check that
both codepaths produce the same result.
Revert commit be8a84c526691667fc04a8241d93a3de1de298ab, except instead
of removing the testcase it added, modify it to check for correct and
consistent behavior. A subsequent patch in this series will fix the
testcase.

We meticulously pass the `exclude` flag to the `treat_directory()`
function so that we can indicate that files in it are excluded rather
than untracked when recursing.
But we did not yet treat submodules the same way.
Because of that, `git status --ignored --untracked` with a submodule
`submodule` in a gitignored `tracked/` would show the submodule in the
"Untracked files" section, e.g.
On branch master
Untracked files:
(use "git add <file>..." to include in what will be committed)
tracked/submodule/
Ignored files:
(use "git add -f <file>..." to include in what will be committed)
tracked/submodule/initial.t
Instead, we would want it to show the submodule in the "Ignored files"
section:
On branch master
Ignored files:

When we taught read_directory_recursive() to recurse into untracked
directories in search of ignored files given DIR_SHOW_IGNORED_TOO, that
had the side effect of teaching it to collect the untracked contents of
untracked directories. It doesn't always make sense to return these,
though (we do need them for `clean -d`), so we introduce a flag
(DIR_KEEP_UNTRACKED_CONTENTS) to control whether or not read_directory()
strips dir->entries of the untracked contents of untracked dirs.
We also introduce check_contains() to check if one dir_entry corresponds
to a path which contains the path corresponding to another dir_entry.
This also fixes known breakages in t7061, since status --ignored now
searches untracked directories for ignored files.

Per eb8c5b87, `status --ignored` by design does not list ignored files
if they are in a directory which contains only ignored and untracked
files (which is itself considered to be untracked) without `-uall`. This
does not make sense for `--ignored`, which claims to "Show ignored files
as well."
Thus we revisit eb8c5b87 and decide that for such directories, `status
--ignored` will list the directory as untracked *and* list all ignored
files within said directory even without `-uall`.

Some text editors like Notepad or LibreOffice write an UTF-8 BOM in
order to indicate that the file is Unicode text rather than whatever the
current locale would indicate.
If someone uses such an editor to edit a gitignore file, we are left
with those three bytes at the beginning of the file. If we do not skip
them, we will attempt to match a filename with the BOM as prefix, which
won't match the files the user is expecting.

The notion of "ignored tracked" directories introduced in 721ac4ed "dir.c:
Make git-status --ignored more consistent" has a few unwanted side effects:
- git-clean -d -X: deletes ignored tracked directories. git-clean should
never delete tracked content.
- git-ls-files --ignored --other --directory: lists ignored tracked
directories instead of "other" directories.
- git-status --ignored: lists ignored tracked directories while contained
files may be listed as modified. Paths listed by git-status should be
disjoint (except in long format where a path may be listed in both the
staged and unstaged section).
Additionally, the current behaviour violates documentation in gitignore(5)
("Specifies intentionally *untracked* files to ignore") and Documentation/
technical/api-directory-listing.txt ("DIR_SHOW_OTHER_DIRECTORIES: Include
a directory that is *not tracked*.").
In dir.c::treat_directory, remove the special handling of ignored tracked
directories, so that the DIR_SHOW_OTHER_DIRECTORIES flag only affects
"other" (i.e. untracked) directories. In dir.c::dir_add_name, check that
added paths are untracked even if DIR_SHOW_IGNORED is set.

'git-status --ignored path/' doesn't list ignored files and directories
within 'path' if some component of 'path' is classified as untracked.
Disable the DIR_SHOW_OTHER_DIRECTORIES flag while traversing leading
directories. This prevents treat_leading_path() with DIR_SHOW_IGNORED flag
from aborting at the top level untracked directory.
As a side effect, this also eliminates a recursive directory scan per
leading directory level, as treat_directory() can no longer call
read_directory_recursive() when called from treat_leading_path().

'git-status --ignored' lists empty untracked directories as ignored, even
though they don't have any ignored files.
When checking if a directory is already listed as untracked (i.e. shouldn't
be listed as ignored as well), don't assume that the directory has only
ignored files if it doesn't have untracked files, as the directory may be
empty.

'git-status --ignored' lists both the ignored directory and the ignored
files if the files are in a tracked sub directory.
When recursing into sub directories in read_directory_recursive, pass on
the check_only parameter so that we don't accidentally add the files.

'git-status --ignored' drops ignored directories if they contain untracked
files in an untracked sub directory.
Fix it by getting exact (recursive) excluded status in treat_directory.

Test all possible use-cases of git-status "--ignored" with the
"--untracked-files" option with values "normal" and "all":
- An untracked directory is listed as untracked if it has a mix of
untracked and ignored files in it. With -uall, ignored/untracked
files are listed as ignored/untracked.
- An untracked directory with only ignored files is listed as
ignored. With -uall, all files in the directory are listed.
- An ignored directory is listed as ignored. With -uall, all files
in the directory are listed as ignored.
- An ignored and committed directory is listed as ignored if it has
untracked files. With -uall, all untracked files in the
directory are listed as ignored.
